Airbnb in New York.

Putting this here for traffic, but wondering if anyone has used Airbnb in the USA as I believe it's slightly different to here in UK.
Would ideally prefer to go down this route as they'll be about 10 of us rather than a hotel.
Maybe a rental might work.

If you've done this what are pros and cons please. Tia.

Unless it’s changed recently (who knows with the pandemic) then short term rentals in apartment buildings aren’t legal so anything you get like that on air bnb is likely to be dodgy. Although that maybe doesn’t apply as there’s no way you’d get 10 of you in one apartment, but if say you were thinking of splitting the group between 2 apartments, then it’s a no go. You should be able to get a house if your budget is massive and/or you don’t mind staying outside Manhattan and that would be ok.

@LakeShoreD thanks. Happy to stay outside of the city. I have heard people turning up to places and owners had changed their mind, with no comeback available.

As above, they have always been illegal in NYC so definitely check that first. I know people who stay in Air BnBs in Weehawken or Hoboken and travel into the city each morning.

Personally, I’ve always stayed in hotels in Manhattan so I can’t advise but 10 people will be difficult to house together in the city.

But if you’re happy to look at houses outside the city… I’ve never done this in the NYC area but I’ve done it in upstate NY a few times (and elsewhere in the US) and I didn’t notice any notable difference between the way Air BnB works there versus in the U.K. or in Europe. Pros versus cons are I imagine obvious- that unless your budget is huge you’ll need to travel some distance into the city but it does mean you can house everyone in one space. Is that what you’re asking??

If, however, you want recommendations of decent areas to stay with good links to the city then I’m sure other posters can help, there are definitely some New Yorkers kicking around on here!

Look for hotels in Long Island City but near the Subway network - can be much cheaper than staying in Manhattan and similar, sometimes quicker, travel time to the sights. Several of them are fairly newly built.

When we went to NYC we booked somewhere I then found out was illegal via the TripAdvisor forum which was a really good resource. Cancelled, got the money back and re-booked what is now the Quinta County Inn and Suites.

I started a thread on the Holidays board about Airbnb in New York for Christmas this year. Interesting answers on there!!

We stayed in one in Brooklyn about 2.5 years ago - it was the lower floor and basement and owners lived above. No idea it wasn't allowed as when we were searching there were 100's on the site!

If it was a 1 or 2 unit building then it would have been legal. Any more than 2 units in a building though and it’s not
