The pet insurance payments have stopped..

So slightly complicated situation, in that dp pays for a pet insurance and care plan (so haircuts, nail cuts etc) for the dog he had with his ex. She kept the dog, and they did a bit of sharing the dog for a while but as they drifted apart, it seemed an extra complication, as well as issues with the dogs training and settling in two different houses, he decided to cut the contact, but continued to pay this cost as part of his responsibility to the pet. If the option was there to take the dog full time we would have, but ex wanted the dog, so he stepped away.

Hes noticed in the last few months that the payment has stopped coming out of his account and hes a bit worried about what this could mean. Hes torn between making contact with ex to ask (they havent been in touch for over a year), or whether hes better not knowing. He would be devastated if the dog has died as i think he feels an element of guilt for not seeing her anymore.

I did suggest that rather than the dog passing away, it might just be that shes cancelled the plan and taken out her own, for ease of communication as i guess on the old plan she would struggle to make any claims or changes as she wasnt the named person. But its also entirely possible that the dog has died so the plan is no longer needed, but i would have thought she would have contacted him if this had happened? Although they've not been in touch for a while, they ended on good terms and had been friendly.

What sort of things would trigger the payments stopping for this sort of pet insurance plan?

It could be a dispute with the insurance claim where they haven’t paid out for something so she cancelled.

Can you have a nose at her social media to see if there is a post about the dog being ill or dying?

How old is the dog? I stopped our pet insurance when the cost of the premiums reached over 50% of the annual coverage limit + excess. When I called to cancel even the agent was like, yeah I would cancel in your shoes too! Now I just save the premiums myself, I have 3x what was the annual coverage limit stashed away to pay for anything that might come up.

Has the policy expired? Not all of them auto-renew, my pet insurance doesn't and I get an email every year with the new price and asking whether I want to continue. Could the renewal email have gone to his ex or into your DP's junk mail?

He could call the insurance company instead of contacting her and just give the policy number and ask why the payments are no longer being collected.

Not renewing it?

ChatterMonkey · 13/01/2022 10:09

I think the reason hes reluctant to contact the ex or the insurance company is that he is avoiding the potential truth, i do t think he wants to hear that the dog has died so is just avoiding asking the question to anyone.

Its possibly not autorenewed but hes been paying it for about 4/5 years now so its a bit odd that its stopped now.

Dog is only 5ish i think so not old enough to be 'expecting' this sort of news.

Not sure ex would be able to cancel based on premiums going up seeing as she isnt the one paying it?

Er, just this!

Just call the company, say they've not collecting payments for a while can they please update.

It's not hard surely?

girlmom21 · 13/01/2022 10:16

She might have sold the dog. That would be worse than the dog dying. He'd know if the dog had died because he'd have received notification from the insurance about the payout for cremation or whatever.

ChatterMonkey · 13/01/2022 14:26

Hadnt thought that she might have sold/given the dog up... I agree that that would be worse, but might explain why she hasnt contacted him to say why the payments have stopped.

If there was any reason for her to need to get rid of the dog we would have taken it in a heartbeat. So would be gutting to know if that had happened.

Contact the insurer ASAP - its not common but it could be an administration error in which case the dog will not be covered if it becomes ill. If that is the case it is very important that the policy is reinstated, not a new policy set up, otherwise pre existing conditions will not be covered.
(Former veterinary receptionist, saw this happen a couple of times).
