Contact lenses for long sightedness - any experience?

I am fed up on being reliant on my glasses all the time. I dont need them for distance but for up close work such as reading labels and working etc. Not a problem when working at my screen as they are constantly on, but when out and about I need to take them off to walk around and then fish them out all the time to read anything.

I have found that I constantly have a pair of glasses on my head ready to use when needed.

Can anyone tell me of their experience with contact lenses for this particular problem. Is it a really weird experience?

And I would really appreciate recommendations on where to go for them.

It's a completely normal problem, the majority of the population will need a different prescription to read at some point in their life - whether that's just reading glasses or varifocals or bifocals. It's called presbyopia and it's caused by the lens in the eye (which controls focussing at different distance) hardening as we age.

I'm in the same boat and yes, it's bloody annoying.

I suspect when I was first qualified, I wasn't quite as sympathetic as I am now.

The options are:

  1. Get a pair of varifocal glasses and wear them all of the time. They do take a bit of getting used to, especially when you're not used to wearing glasses for distance.
  2. Try varifocal contact lenses, they are much better than they used to be, but the way they works means that not everyone can tolerate them and they do reduce the clarity of your distance vision.
Most women's eyes become more dry too with age and that combined with a slower blink rate means that they can dry out more quickly in front of a pc. They are definitely worth a try though and the opticians will give you a few pairs after your initial assessment and you can see how you get on with them.

Personally, I do both options. I tend to use my varifocal glasses for using a computer screen or watching TV and using ipad at night.
Then reading glasses for reading a book in bed.

I also have contact lenses, which I sometimes use at work - although for me the vision isn't quite good enough for me to feel comfortable driving in them. So I often only put them in at work. If I'm going out in the evening and driving, I often only put one lens in as that improves my long vision, but I also am able to read!

Anyway. Make an appointment with your optician and they can go through the options with you.
