How many steps do you walk / aim for?

I'm 52 & have decided that 2022 is the year I get fit so i have been tracking steps & walking for an hour 3 times a week for the past couple of weeks.

I have a relatively sedentary lifestyle as I work in an office but used to walk at lunchtime when I was in work

I'm working from home a lot now so less walking incorporated into the day (walk in g to meetings / lunch etc) I averaged 5k steps without actually trying iykwim

Today I have walked 11,000 steps & some uncounted ones around the house, up & down stairs etc without the tracker.

I went on a local walk at lunch time & walked 6.36km lots of it was hilly & it really tired me out.

It got me wondering - do you walk more or less each day?

I average around 20k. Get a dog, no surer way to up your step count!

PiesNotGuys · 12/01/2022 18:20

20000 a day but I give myself a “day off” on the first of each month to rest my knee

If I don’t have enough steps by the evening I go for a walk/run until I do

NalPolishRemover · 12/01/2022 18:21

We had a dog but she died last year aged 17! She was not able for long walks for a good few years before that. But in her prime she was a great way to get out alright

20k is impressive- that's about 12 or 13km?

Wow - so i need to up my game!
I also think I need a fitbit type device as I'm tracking on my phone so I walk about doing day to day stuff without it & it's only capturing the deliberate stuff

Today done 22k.

I have two dogs which I often walk separately (so that's 6 miles to start with) then today I went to dog training, walked around supermarket, around garden, around house, cooking and cleaning.

On work days I usually do around 15k.

Plus I had a swim this morning too.

NalPolishRemover · 12/01/2022 18:25

Are you all using fitbits?

SilverRingahBells · 12/01/2022 18:32

I aim for 10K plus. If I did it all in one single batch of an hour and a half then I'd be quite tired, but in six batches of fifteen minutes or whatever (eg house to tube, tube to office, toddle out at lunchtime, office to tube, tube to house, nip to the takeaway) I don't notice it at all.

NalPolishRemover · 12/01/2022 18:51

I know what you mean. The 10k I walked today was a deliberate walk. I want to get out in the fresh air a few times a week..we live in a beautiful area but I have not always made the most of it

It was on top of the walk around the supermarket & around the house etc but I didn't track that stuff.

Think what I've realised is I need a fitbit to get a true sense of the day

I use a Fitbit and it really motivates me. I also play challenges with my friends which helps me up my game.
I have a desk based job and have been working from home since the pandemic started so I have to consciously make an effort to fit my steps in.
Today I've done 14,500 steps. I am usually between 13-16,000 steps a day.
I would really recommend a Fitbit. I love mine. Good luck Smile

Lacedwithgrace · 12/01/2022 19:14

Between 5000 and 10000 steps. I stop when things start to hurt and it works for me

ajandjjmum · 12/01/2022 19:22

I aim for £10K but am really struggling to get back in to it after a manic December. I'm fed up of marching beside my bed at night - watching TV - to get to the target!

ajandjjmum · 12/01/2022 19:22

Oops - 10K not £10K, although the second would be nice each day! Grin

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/01/2022 19:45

I sometimes think people live in massive houses the amount of incidental (not exercise) steps they get. My MIL seems to get them by breathing... (10,000 today weeding the garden...)

I aim for 10k. It takes concentrated effort

actiongirl1978 · 12/01/2022 19:59

@NalPolishRemover yes I have a smartwatch, not a fitbit.

BaconAndAvocado · 12/01/2022 20:45

I usually manage 15K a day but I have a dog.

NalPolishRemover · 12/01/2022 20:59

Thanks all. I think I'll get a smart watch / fitbit so I can track more accurately.

I also think it takes effort to walk 10k steps each day. Especially during the week. I leave my house before 8am & get home anytime between 6 - 7pm & then need to make dinner/ do laundry / spend some time with teen dc etc

We live in a rural location. It's beautiful but no footpaths or street lights & pitch dark at night so off putting to go out at 8 or 9pm

I'm hoping to get into a better habit of using my lunch break to walk- again mee ting effort to bring in trainers as can't walk in office shoes / boots even though they're always flat. Also if its lashing out I find it hard to get soaked & bedraggled if I have meetings on zoom in the after noon

All excuses that I'll have to work around I know!

I have been doing 3 10k walks over the week on top of the incidental steps.

I'm not fit at the m moment so am planning to work it up over the coming months

The 10k walk today was on country Rome d / tracks & was very hilly - ascending quite high & it was most definitely harder work than walking on the flat

I aim for 10k , I’m doing a challenge atm where I aim to walk or run 5k a day for all of January Grin

I cycle, do body conditioning workouts, yoga and dance a lot too so I’m pretty tired this month!!

ShanghaiDiva · 12/01/2022 21:08

I do a minimum of 10k every day. If I see I am not going to meet my target I will go out for a walk in the evening. I use a xiao mi band.

InMincePieRehabBackSoon · 12/01/2022 21:13

I am for 8k but it's usually less on days I'm in the office and more on days I'm not. Normally averages out to 8k+ a day.

Mushrooms0up · 12/01/2022 21:13

I’m so impressed by the numbers on here!! WFH might be about 5k and that’s with a conscious effort to go for a walk.

Eg today:

Walk before work
Laundry
General tidying
Supermarket after work

And I’ve done 4,252.

For the people hitting about 20k how long does it take?

SallyWD · 12/01/2022 21:15

I aim for 10,000 steps a day and generally achieve it or just under. It seems beneficial for me. I sleep better, feel like I've exercised and it definitely maintains my weight.

Uutti · 12/01/2022 21:17

A tiny tiny amount, I'm currently saving up for a treadmill so I can get one to walk on and work up to 10k a day.

QforCucumber · 12/01/2022 21:26

Monday to Friday in the office I’m lucky to hit 4k steps, can get to 5/6k with a brisk lunchtime walk, I just don’t seem to be able to find the time between nursery drop off school drop off get to work, sit for 7.5 hours, pick ups and then home dinner bath and bed to get any more in - that’s using a smart watch so picks up everything

PiesNotGuys · 12/01/2022 22:25

I’ve just hit my 20k for the day.

Went to bed with 500 steps already on because didn’t go to bed till 1am
Got to 1000 running round the house getting ready for work, getting kids up for school, breakfast and chores.
Up to 4500 by the time I’ve walked to school and on to work.
Job is on/off, sometimes desk based but often active too. Quiet day today, so wasn’t quite at 10,000 yet when I left at 4pm.
Up to 13000 by the time I’d walked home.
Nearly at 14000 by the time I’d done chores, homework, washing, dinner for kids.
Walk to exercise class, 40 mins class. Walk to pick up takeaway for our dinner. Hit 20000 on the walk home with my curry.

RoseMartha · 12/01/2022 22:29

I aim for 10k as a minimum
Ideally 12-15k
Today I managed just over 10

I think my average is abt 12.5k

Yes use a fit bit

Obviously there are a few occasions I might do less but usually at least 8k.
