Boris as PM: how do we want this to end?

TheWhalrus · 12/01/2022 11:42

I think most of us are in agreement that Boris should probably resign as PM owing to the latest 'partygate' revelations. Nonetheless, he probably won't do the decent thing (he never has, really), therefore how do we see this ending?

My ideal scenario: Boris faces a vote of no confidence in the next few months that he very narrowly survives and continues as PM. The amount of discontent among his own party leads to a sufficient amount of defections and rebellion to enable an early election to be called (either later this year or perhaps in 2023) in which Boris subsequently gets comprehensively voted out of government, losing even his own seat in the process.

Bit of a long shot, I know, although basically I've realized I actually want Boris to lead the tories into the next election, simply to give the general public the chance to express their anger. How does anyone else see this playing out?

As long as Labour don't win the next GE, I don't really care!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 12/01/2022 13:05

@AnotherRandomUsernom

In answer to your question, quickly. Who would replace him though, another one of the party goers? Good luck to the person who has to put up with the flat decor though! Did we pay for that? Looks horrendous Grin
Liz Truss, I reckon.

The flat will be redecorated again after a surprise donation from a 'well-wisher'.

As a Labour voter I would like Michael Gove aka Pob to become leader, as he is so out of touch and unlikeable he would cost them lots of votes (I think? ), the a Labour/Lib Dem / Green coalition (just thinking what is vaguely likely)

Yes Prime Minister is on iplayer at the moment. Rather sadly the useless Jim Hacker seems a better prospect than our current PM.

@PurpleDaisies

Sunak

God no. He's an odious little man. I'd actually prefer Boris to stay than for Sunak to become leader.

CleanUpTime · 12/01/2022 13:15

How do I think it will end...boris will stay and ride out the storm but will leave by the spring
Conservatives will continue until scheduled GE
And they will win again but not by a majority or 80+ like last time

Yes, that's would be my ideal too.
itwasntaparty · 12/01/2022 13:19

I think he will walk away, sooner rather than later. Earn more money on the speaking circuit, fund his kids.

Fuck knows what that would mean though. I wouldn't chose any of the options to be PM from any party. KS is practically mute. AR would be a disaster. Sunak? Patel? No thanks.

colouringindoors · 12/01/2022 13:20

I'd like it to end asap with him being frogmarched out of Whitehall by Police in handcuffs with crowds of people clapping the police.

Mo1911 · 12/01/2022 13:21

Quickly.

me too, though I tend towards Lib Dem in life, we need to all work together. In the next GE I'll vote for anyone who is most likely to beat the Tories.
deplorabelle · 12/01/2022 13:21

I would like his downfall to be slow and messy and for all the henchmen to get tarnished in the process (especially Sunak who has dodged the flak too much up to now).

Then I would like him to suffer a period of being out in the cold during which he suffers enough financial loss to discover how much the social safety net has been eroded in this country. Oh and he should also face criminal charges for misconduct in public office and fraud over covid procurement.

Will grudgingly accept gove as caretaker PM as he is likely to be the most vindictive in punishing BJ.

After the next general election...hopefully with a hideously painful STD.

Boris loses the election and gets drug-resistant Gonorrhea (or similar) at the same time? This is even more niche than my idealized scenario, although i'd 100% take it.

Still, I suppose STDs are a fair bit more likely with Boris than with previous tory leaders.

In a very deep pit with lots of dung on top.

sadpapercourtesan · 12/01/2022 13:41

I just want it to end. During the last few months of the Trump administration I developed an actual eye twitch every time the obxious fool's voice came on. I've now developed it for Boris Johnson. I despair that we've built a society in which it's the scum, not the cream, that rises to the top. That there are still people out there who think this is better than the alternative, because Keir Starmer is a bit stodgy, or lacks charisma, or whatever. We're a poisoned well and deserve everything we get.

sadpapercourtesan · 12/01/2022 13:41

obnoxious

Cuck00soup · 12/01/2022 13:47

I agree he should resign and am certain that he won't.

Thinking back to the demise of Margaret Thatcher, wasn't there a stalking horse candidate that stood against her first? I seem to remember that was how Michael Hesiltine came to challenge her although he eventually lost to John Major.

I don't know if there is anyone with enough broad support to take him on - yet - but surely it can only be a matter of time.

TheWhalrus · 12/01/2022 14:22

@Cuck00soup According to the Guardian news thread (not exactly the least biased source available i grant you), it sounds as if the threshold for getting letters to the 1922 committee may be breached soon www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/jan/12/boris-johnson-no-10-party-pmqs-keir-starmer-labour-coronavirus-latest-updates-covid-live

Not sure this necessarily requires there to be one or more popular other candidates waiting in the wings, but a vote of no confidence now seems like the most likely scenario, to me.

OP posts:
Cuck00soup · 12/01/2022 14:28

None of which fills me with any confidence tbh!

John Major was elected because he wasn't Portillo or Heseltine and I'd say there is a decent chance of another non-entity being crowned for not being Gove/Sunak/Truss.

It's not a promising field of candidates.

TheWhalrus · 12/01/2022 14:33

My understanding is that the leadership election process has changed since John Major's days

Nowadays its as many rounds as needed with votes only from the parliamentary tory party, then the last round is 1 vote for all party members (about 100,000 people in total as I understand). In a final round scenario, I think Liz Truss (believe it or not?) is the most popular candidate among members.

Quickly.
The longer he lingers the more likely the Tories are not to lose the next election, so whilst I agree that quick would be good, slow has its merits too.
Frazzled2207 · 12/01/2022 14:57

One point about Sunak. His flat apparently overlooks the garden. It is pretty inconceivable that he didn’t know about it. Ditto the cheese and wine event. He may not have gone but you’d have thought that I’d had prime ministerial ambitions he would have sought to discourage them from going ahead

Or indeed if he had anything about him, he would be outspokenly condemning all those who broke the law in his back garden now. His silence says a lot about his integrity.
