Hot dogs 3 days in a row?

Intothelight123 · 12/01/2022 10:19

I know im going to be shamed and that's totally fine.

Im very unwell at the moment, my kids have had hotdogs (in pasta, and on their own) for the last 2 nights and I'm considering doing hot dog pasta again. It's something they both eat and I just cant be doing with them being picky right now.

Does anyone have any easy to do, quick meals which are better than hot dogs? Right now it's just a case of everyone fed, no one dead, but I feel so guilty over their eating.

Any suggestions would be great.

You're ill and your kids have eaten. No shaming here! If they want hot dog pasta go for it. We have pasta soup and cheese when I'm ill because it takes about 5 mins!

AsYouWishButtercup · 12/01/2022 10:23

Why do you feel guilty? That’s you’re problem here, not hot dogs. It’s 3 days, you’re ill, it happens.

Women and especially mothers have GOT to stop feeling guilty over the tiniest and most insignificant imperfections.

girlmom21 · 12/01/2022 10:23

It depends what you have in really. Tuna pasta bake?

TankFlyBoss · 12/01/2022 10:24

Don't feel bad, there is no need. Will they eat eggs? I do a lot of scrambled eggs and dippy eggs when I am too tired / busy / rushed / not feeling well.

girlmom21 · 12/01/2022 10:24

Oh yeah also absolutely no shame here - you're ill and your kids have full belly's.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 12/01/2022 10:25

It's a few days when you are not well. Honestly do what you need to to get through it . If hotdogs means everyone eats with a minimum of moaning then do it.

thingymaboob · 12/01/2022 10:25

Scrambled egg or omelette
Fish fingers and oven chips
Beans on toast

APurpleSquirrel · 12/01/2022 10:26

Would they eat rice? You could use the hot dog sausages & make sausage & egg fried rice instead? Sneak in a few veggies if available?

thingymaboob · 12/01/2022 10:26

When ill I've also just given my child weetabix for dinner

Flatandhappy · 12/01/2022 10:29

This really isn’t the time to beat yourself up, anything you can produce that they will eat is fine. Tuna pasta with tinned tomatoes would have been my go to in your situation but that’s because my kids would always eat it. Some grated cheese on top would be bonus points, hope you feel better soon.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/01/2022 10:30

When I'm sick all nutritional standards are thrown to the wind. Hot dogs and pasta is at least a meal, and if you can find it in you to slice up some cucumber and an apple or maybe add cheese to the pasta instead of hot dogs, then you should pat yourself on the back IMO.

Havilland · 12/01/2022 10:38

It won’t harm them in the slightest.

Get well soon.

FinallyHere · 12/01/2022 10:46

Another voice hoping you feel better soon and asking you, with kindness, to not beat yourself up about this, or anything else.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 12/01/2022 11:16

If your I’ll and they have been fed, that’s all you need to worry about.
Other options
Baked potatoes with beans/cheese/tuna
Any thing on toast eggs, beans etc.
Oven pizza
Fishfinger sandwiches
Soup
Pesto pasta
Toasties

Intothelight123 · 12/01/2022 11:16

Thanks so much, I really thought I was doing something awful. These suggestions are great, I especially love the hotdog fried rice idea, they both love rice too. I think that's what they'll have for dinner tonight.

I feel a lot better about it now, thanks all

It's not going to hurt them.
My kids had toast, crisps cake and fruit once when I was so ill I couldn't even stand to cook and didn't have anything quick in.
if you want an alternative that's quick and minimal effort. Pizza? Nuggets and chips.?

shinynewapple21 · 12/01/2022 11:21

Hope you will feel better soon OP.

Your children will be fine - although other posters have made some other suggestions for alternative quick meals if you prefer . The main problem is likely to be your DC wanting hot dog pasta next week too!

As an aside - why have i never heard of this delicacy ? My DC now grown up but what a perfect quick meal!

womaninatightspot · 12/01/2022 11:34

Pasta and bits is a regular meal in this house. Plain pasta kids mix through what they want mayo, pesto, grated cheese from a bag. Whatever sliced meats are in the fridge, peas , cherry tomatoes/ sweetcorn.

No point knocking yourself out when ill. I find children's appreciation of food is inverse to the time and effort that went in. Best saved for when you are well.

Squiff70 · 12/01/2022 11:44

No shaming from me either! Do what you need to do to feed your children whilst trying to recover.

I'm under a massive amount of stress ATM and not functioning. My two year old is temporarily living off chicken nuggets or fish fingers with chips or jacket potato and broccoli. It's far from ideal but it's about all I can manage at the moment.

Get well soon!

Lizzy1980 · 12/01/2022 11:50

No one ever died from having hotdogs three days running. Hope you’re feeling better soon

Sirzy · 12/01/2022 11:53

Sometimes in life just having food is all that matters. Not worth getting worried about.

Stick some frozen peas with it if your worried!

Justcallmebebes · 12/01/2022 11:56

Poor man's spaghetti. Spaghetti pasta with a bit of tomato puree and cheese grated on top? My grandkids (and kids before) love it

averythinline · 12/01/2022 12:02

Frozen peas and/or sweetcorn chucked in the pasta.. were my nutritional saviours or cherry tomatoes.with baking tray stuff....when couldn't stand with vertigo couldn't do pasta! Although since then got traybake book and will just chuck stuff in oven and got more frozen veg eg squash/Mediterranean easier to shove in traybake/oven

HunkyPunk · 12/01/2022 12:17

Like pp, my ‘crap food’ mitigation tactic has always been to add peas/sweetcorn/mixed veg (I always have a bag of something handy in freezer) or serve up with cucumber/sweet pepper ‘side salad’ (the only salad mine will eat!) In my book that turns any meal into a healthy option! Honestly, don’t worry, op and get well soon.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/01/2022 12:24

I find children's appreciation of food is inverse to the time and effort that went in.

Now I think about it, this is completely true of DS. Why do I bother?!
