Recommend me a book to make me love reading again

Since I’ve had my 3 young children (all under 5) I have found I have so little attention or motivation to read. I used to love to read, could not get enough of it, funny how I could spend hours on mumsnet reading threads.

My new years resolution is to try to spark this love again.
I usually read thriller type books but have always had a special love for Jodi Picoult books. Not really into rom coms, just need to something to hold my attention.
Please recommend me your absolute favourite book so that I can order a few to kick off this year as I mean to go on. Thanks

Not my absolute favourite book but if you like thrillers 'three hours' and 'the push' are both books I could not put down

The most recent book I couldn't put down was called The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Catherine Webb. Not the sort of thing I usually read but it was well paced, with interesting characters and premise.

I'd advise trying the first book in a series of you want to really get back into reading. I rather like crime and urban fantasy with a dash of humour (sorry, am nerd) so stuff like Rivers of London, the Bryant and May books, the Invisible Library series (it's classed as YA I think but good for an easy read). But as you like Jodi Piccoult, I should imagine you like the exact opposite!

I read The Woman In Cabin 10 a few days ago which I really enjoyed.

To get you back in I’d suggest Sarah Waters’ books, especially Fingersmith - perfect for cosy winter evenings imo.

Other books I've really enjoyed over the last year or so:

Daisy Jones & The Six - this was so much fun to read - inspired by Fleetwood Mac, the story of the meteoric rise of a band and how they wrote their killer album - written as a series of interviews.

Three Hours (recommended above) - this made me very tense when reading it though. Story of a school shooting. I guess similar in content to Jodi Picoult's 19 minutes?

I LOVE almost everything William Boyd has written. My absolute favourite was Any Human Heart, which tells the story of a man's life from boyhood to old age. There was a lovely dramatisation of it too with Matthew Macfadyen and Jim Broadbent.

Another favourite is Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, which tells the story of a woman who keeps coming back to life. Like Any Human Heart, it starts from childhood to old age.

And yes to the recommendation of audio books - excellent when pushing the pram, or sitting at the playground with not much else to do. Also in the car if they're young enough not to be listening!!

Some YA fiction?

The Book Thief isn't a perfect book, but I couldn't put it down.

TheContinentalHotel · 12/01/2022 11:02

The Midnight Library and The Night Circus definitely!

If you like Jodi Picoult, try Diane Chamberlain. Lisa Jewell is one of my favourite authors and her more recent books are thrillers. Also, I could not put down Verity by Coleen Hoover.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 12/01/2022 11:17

One of my favourite authors in the 90s was Iain Banks. It's hard to describe The Wasp Factory, it's very strange and nothing like I'd ever read before! His other books include The Crow Road, Espedair Street, Complicity. He's also written science fiction as Iain M Banks. Sadly no longer with us.

I liked the Rebus books by Ian Rankin as well. Another Scottish author Denise Mina writes thrillers which are good too.

I also read one of the Shetland books by Ann Cleeves after watching the TV show, will need to read more.

I pilgrim. Terry Hayes. Long but incredible.

MuesliNameChange · 12/01/2022 11:36

Still Life by Sarah Winman got me back into reading again last year, followed immediately by the Strike series. Both highly recommended!

brittanyfairies · 12/01/2022 16:01

A previous poster mentioned 3 hours, that book had my adrenaline pumping and heart racing, I couldn't go to sleep until I finished it.

I've been working hard on getting back into reading, and I've read some great books during the last couple of years. The Chronicles of St Mary's books by Jodi Taylor got me back into reading, they are easy to read and great fun. Others I've loved have been:

The Hearts Invisible Furies
Miss Benson's Beatle
American Dirt
A History of Loneliness
Anything by Graham Norton
The Girl with the Louding Voice

I tend to buy my books when they come up for 99p on Kindle. I'm not in the UK so I'm not sure what everyone is reading, so I tend to look for books with a lot of reviews on Amazon or Good Reads. I've had some great books just from doing that.

batmanladybird · 12/01/2022 16:34

Just lurking on here to make a list. My kindle is full but it's mostly non fiction. I need to read more escapism rather than binging old box sets that aren't good for me.
