What the hell is happening to my tongue?

I’ve been feeling under the weather for a few days and yesterday I woke up with really painful lumps on my tongue. A quick google suggested it could be a Covid symptom but I’ve done several LFT’s and they’ve all come back negative. I called the doctor this morning as swelling had got worse and it was still painful. Doctor suggested it may be an allergic reaction and to take an anti histamine and ibuprofen to help with swelling and pain. I’ve done that and it’s made zero difference. The doctor just spoke to me over the phone so he didn’t see my tongue.

It’s now really swollen that it’s affecting my speech and it’s uncomfortable to keep it in my mouth, if that makes sense. It’s more comfortable to just let it flop out. I’ve called 111 and a doctor should be calling me back in the next couple of hours. It’s going to be a real struggle if I have to go to hospital as I have 2 dc’s who would have to come with me which I’d really like to avoid.

Has anyone had anything like this before? I’m sucking ice cubes which seems to help a bit but it’s so painful and uncomfortable Sad

I had this ten days ago! felt really under the weather, sore throat, swollen glands and tiny white bumps on the top and tip of my tongue - so painful and i couldn’t eat or drink hot drinks without it hurting. I tested negative as wondered if it was the covid tongue.

i googled it (which obviously isn’t great but it helped for this) and it seemed to be something called eruptive lingual papillitis. basically kids can get it and it’s viral - so i must have got it from my daughter or something —although both she and my husband seemed fine!

I used bonjela and/or iglu before I ate, drank and slept which helped.

Then the tongue bumps disappeared within 2 days! my throat hurt for a few more days and I had swollen glands for a few days more but fine now.

Obviously go to the doctor if you can’t breathe easily. but otherwise maybe it’s the above:
