Would you sell a house to buy and live on a narrowboat?

Just that? Your only property... for a boat life...

No because I have 3 kids. Well not now at least. Also where would I put all my craft stuff Shock

Luzina · 10/01/2022 19:36

Definitely not, but I like the space and comforts of a house. If it’s someone’s preference though then they should go for it.

bravotango · 10/01/2022 19:36

Nope never - a few friends have done this (separate boats!) and there is some sort of maintenance job to be done every day, even in the cold/dark/rain/winter etc. Too high maintenance for me!

TooWicked · 10/01/2022 19:37

I do often dream of a simple life like that. We’d have to get rid of an awful lot of stuff though. And find somewhere to stay when the boat needs to dry dock for repairs and maintenance.

In reality, no, I wouldn’t.

Rainbowqueeen · 10/01/2022 19:38

No.
I would rent my house out and rent a narrow boat though. I think it would be a great experience but not so great as a pensioner so I would want to keep my house so I had a secure option for my old age

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/01/2022 19:42

No, narrow boat life is damper and more expensive than you might imagine.

A very good friend of mine lived on a narrow boat for a few years. It was moored very close to a Sainsbury’s. She would come round and exchange a bath for cake.

Havilland · 10/01/2022 19:43

No. Unless it’s cost millions I imagine there would always be the threat of damp.

There is a poster on here who lives on a boat. She may have a better opinion!

321zyx · 10/01/2022 19:44

No.......too damp!

Havilland · 10/01/2022 19:45

This one looks depressing

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 10/01/2022 19:46

Nope. Cold, damp, tiny, scary, expensive pains in the arse to maintain.

Havilland · 10/01/2022 19:46

This would be the only standard I could live in, boatwise

Never. A depreciating asset

I don't think that's the next example!

Never occurred to me they'd be damp, how stupid does that sound.

SunflowerSmith · 10/01/2022 19:47

No way, I like my home comforts too much and convenience, we've got a caravan that we go to very regularly and while I love being there it's always nice to come home and have space around me and all my stuff with plenty of room to store said stuff.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/01/2022 19:49

No, I think it would be miserable!

JorisBonson · 10/01/2022 19:49

Yes, it's my actual dream!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

PlanetNormal · 10/01/2022 19:50

Absolutely not. I would rather live in a spacious house which appreciates over time than a cramped oversized floating bathtub which depreciates over time.

Joystir59 · 10/01/2022 19:50

No, boats are cold in winter

HeadNorth · 10/01/2022 19:50

Hell no, sounds awful.

bigbluebus · 10/01/2022 19:50

I love a canal boat holiday but live on one? - no thanks.

freelions · 10/01/2022 19:51

I would prefer a yacht if I was going to become a live aboard

Gives you the option of an adventure to the Med!

Northernsoullover · 10/01/2022 19:51

I follow some people on Tiktok who live on narrowboats. I think I could do it but it's not an option where I live. No canals.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 10/01/2022 19:52

This one, yes.

Plus, I’ve got a massive dog, a cat, a husband and 3 adult kids. It’d be a bit of a squeeze Grin
