Any medical people know whether this could be linked?

Attempted to give blood today but didnt work, apparently my blood was clotting too quickly and blocking the needle.

Im home now and wondering whether the fact that Im currently on my period have anything to do with it? I know that period blood isnt 'blood' from your veins, but thinking maybe the body does something to make clotting happen faster during period and this affects veins as well?

A more concerning potential link is that my dad has PV, which is to do with blood thickness. Not sure if its something that is hereditary or not though. Also not sure if this is linked as when my dad was diagnosed, it was via blood donation, it flagged as too high an iron count. Mine was fine today i assume.

How concerned should I be about my blood clotting that quickly? Nurse said that she has seen it before but it isnt really that common.

I think perhaps a call to your GP tomorrow to discuss would be advisable.

Pv isn't inherited and your period probably wouldn't affect it. Are you drinking plenty, eating well etc?

Sorry forgot to say I'm not a medical person but I had thick blood when dehydrated x

Not medical. But the practice nurse always tells me to drink plenty of water before blood tests. Dehydration could have been a factor for you.

I have Factor V Leiden. It could be that.

It most likely means they weren’t in a big enough vein/in a vein at all (may have passed through one).

It is possible i was dehydrated, i had made an effort to drink lots but may not have been enough.

I wasnt too concerned until she said that it wasnt very common, as I would have assumed not being able to donate due to dehydration would be fairly common?

Dont think it was connected to not finding the vein properly, the nurse firstly thought it was that, but when she pulled the needle out to abort the donation, there was a 'string' of blood linking the injection site and the needle, which she said meant it was clogging the needle, rather than not being in the vein properly.
