£200 to treat myself

Teddansononmyown · 09/01/2022 15:44

It's been a really difficult few months and my lovely mum gave me £200 today with the instructions that it must not go on bills, the house or the kids. I have to 'treat myself'
It's been so long since I've had cash to just squander on myself that I have no idea what to get. I get everything second hand and not a huge clothes person. I could do with a new purse but could never spend such a huge amount on something like that.
If you had £200 just for you, what would you buy?

I've just ordered some Penhaligon's perfume for just less. The last time I treated myself with £200, I got a necklace.

Maybe a new purse and a new coat, or new boots? Or purse and bag?

Lottieskeeper · 09/01/2022 15:56

Personally I'd split it and buy something to keep. Like shoes or a nice (but reasonably priced) leather bag. And a bit of pampering like a haircut or a manicure.

Arewethebadguys · 09/01/2022 15:58

If you're not keen on buying 'stuff' could you use it to learn something new eg a course, or pay for lessons for something? You could pamper yourself and get your nails done/book some massages for the next few months? I'm now falling down a rabbit hole of what I would do with £200 . . .

I would get a pair of black Chelsea boots and good spring/autumn coat when the shops begin selling them

SophiesMummySaid · 09/01/2022 16:06

I would:
a) Buy some nice quality things for myself that I would use a lot eg handbag, cost, boots, make up etc
Or b) a weekend trip away with friends - train fare, hotel, dinner

Kitkat151 · 09/01/2022 16:26

Buy a purse and also some other things....it doesn’t all have to be spent on one thing

OhThatChicken · 09/01/2022 16:34

I’d get a pair of Uggs. I know they’re a bit controversial here but I’m currently eyeing a pair in their sale for £109 that I’d love. The last few winters I’ve bought cheapo £30 versions from Amazon and they’ve not lasted so buying proper would bring me real joy and keep me warm. Then a hair cut and some money on books - and maybe a trip to a cafe for a slice of cake and a coffee to read in silence.

MintMe · 09/01/2022 16:40

I know the instructions are to not spend it on the home, but is there anything you think would bring you joy when you used it? For example, I treated myself to a gorgeous lamp last year with birthday money as I could never normally justify it, and I love it so much. I sit next to it every night and it honestly makes me smile whenever I turn it on.

Treat yourself to a decent purse. The sales are still on, so you could grab yourself a good bargain. House of Fraser have a lot of purses in their sale
www.houseoffraser.co.uk/sale/bags-and-luggage/purses

A hair cut - even a trim will make you feel better.

Something to make your everyday life a bit nicer eg scarf or gloves, a nice travel mug.

Plus, a nice lunch somewhere.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/01/2022 17:02

Sit with it a bit and keep a list on your phone

But a nice purse, handbag and shoes

Or just purse and handbag if you want to spend more

Or a purse and gold earrings

Something that will last, with anything left over spent having a glass of wine in a cafe.

Pattygonia · 09/01/2022 17:15

As Pp said, I’d buy something for the home that was a treat and it would br8ng me joy every time I used it. I’d probably buy a piglet in bed pure linen duvet cover (or from la redoute or soak and sleep for better prices). Or I’d buy some silk pyjamas or a silk dressing gown - I haven’t checkeD the Liberty sale this year as I’m trying not to be tempted, but they sometimes have gorgeous silk dressing gowns at good reductions. (And if not, I’d go for a tana lawn pair of pjs)

Enjoy your shopping - and what a lovely mum you have!

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 09/01/2022 17:22

What a fab mum! I think I got a card at Xmas/birthday and that was that.

7eleven · 09/01/2022 17:33

I’d buy a velvetiser, to have tummy hot chocolate and a nice range of skin care products.

CormoranStrike · 09/01/2022 17:34

I’d buy a kindle and some books

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 09/01/2022 17:35

Ugg slippers and Tom Ford perfume.

LadyOfMisrule · 09/01/2022 22:02

I'd buy a pair of Duo boots. My last pair have just worn out, and I can't bring myself to spend money on a new pair.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 09/01/2022 22:08

I’d have a spa day and massage.

Workyticket · 09/01/2022 22:11

I'd but
A pair of DMs
A purse
A weighted blanket

user1477249785 · 09/01/2022 22:13

I'd get a haircut and then buy a purse.

pumpkinpie01 · 09/01/2022 22:22

How nice of her . Definitely get a purse , maybe just wander round the shop see hat catches your eye . I was in Leeds today I would have had no trouble getting through £200 😀 coat , boots , matching underwear, pj's , candles , earrings , Ted Baker slippers , Lush shower gels , quality lipstick . Have fun spending it !

RoseMartha · 09/01/2022 22:25

I would buy some stud 9ct gold earrings so I have a spare pair. Atm if I lose one I will be wearing odd ones. £30-40

Some new underwear as its getting tatty. £15-20

Some chocolate from Hotel Chocolate. £10-20

A back massage up to £50ish.

And save the rest until I need something

Although, tbh I would be tempted to put it all towards some new lounge furniture as the Tv unit and storage thing is falling to bits. But then that is not a treat just for me. So might not count.

CovidForChristmas · 09/01/2022 22:26

An expensive moisturiser for my face.

HandWash · 09/01/2022 22:28

Lovely skin care products
Hair cut
Nails
Facial

Gladioli23 · 09/01/2022 22:37

Worth trying TK Maxx for purses - I got one from Visconti about a decade ago and it's still in mint condition and looks exactly like the day I bought it - in spite of having been bashed around very uncaringly by me for the last ten years.

I think it set me back about £15 so wouldn't make much of a dent in your £200.

Do you have a really good coat? If not, that's what I would be tempted to spend the rest on.

From the point of view of wearability and longevity I think my Barbour is the best value coat I own - if you look in the sales at the right time (generally on country store websites rather than Barbour's own), they can come down to somewhere a bit over a hundred pounds. Which is a lot of money but they do last decades. But it might depend what your coat priorities are: waterproof and windproof are mine and it serves those purposes admirably.

Tambourinetunes · 09/01/2022 22:43

I’d start with new bras because all clothing will look better with good support.
