You absolute Star, Umaymah Dakri. This is me, every time I try to go out.

Woman calls on drivers to help wheelchair users by parking safely
www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-leicestershire-59894959

Umaymah Dakri, 21, from Leicester, who has spina bifida, started her #dontcurbtheaccess initiative on Instagram to chart her experiences of being forced out into busy roads because of drivers parking on dropped kerbs.
A video she has made about the issue has had 5,000 views.
She said: "Parking on the kerb can be resolved if people just reconsider their actions and just find a safer place to park because it is unsafe for people in wheelchairs, like myself."

People just don’t care, I find some areas of country worse than others. I live in London so it happens but not that often usually van drives dropping off etc but when I visit family in wales it’s given people park all over pavements and drop curbs because to many cars for the roads. I could do a 10min walk and have leave the pavement 20 times often spending long stretches in the road because once your down to avoid a parked car you can’t get back up until next curb. Stresses me out no end at all. And of course cars are ones beep you. Sadly though no one takes seriously no traffic wardens routinely ticket and it’s just well This makes it easier for car drivers so…..

It’s so annoying. Dropped kerbs shouldn’t be blocked and if parking is such that you have to park partially on a pavement only do so if plenty of space for wheelchair users to be able to pass safely.

Yes, this is something ambulant folk don't grasp.

It's not just that you're going round one car: you have to reverse to the last unblocked dropped kerb – then stay in the road till the next one. You can be in the road for a longggg distance, including going round all the cars which have parked properly.

If it's OK to trash a statue that might be offending folk, surely it's OK to trash a selfish cunts dropped-kerb-blocking parked car ?

It can only take one blocked dropped kerb, and some folk aren't getting to the shops. Or bus stop. Or wherever.

The problem is that most people see themselves as a one off "I'm just going to be quick" and don't see that it's a constant issue.

People frequently park across our dropped drive. They could park almost always less than 10m away not in anyone's way.

As a standard thing people are apologetic, but normally say "I was just..."

What they don't get is that to them it's just five minutes, they know they're not going to be long and so why are you bothered.
To you, it's the seventh time in three days you've had to ask someone to move to get onto/off the drive. When you came out and saw the car across you have no idea whether the person is dropping a parcel next door and will be 2 minutes, or whether having knocked on the closest 10 houses you still won't know whose car it is and it will be there for the next 24 hours.

Sorry for one so young to have to learn that no one gives a shit about the less able so there's no point talking about "reconsidering" actions. They've already considered it, and considered it to be perfectly acceptable.

SerendipityJane
Unfortunately that is very, very true.

Well done that woman:

Yep, some people will never care. But I'm deciding to be optimistic about her impact on the persuadable.Grin

If some of the "I'm just going to be quicks" improve their parking some of the time, that in itself will be a major improvement.

I use a wheelchair. I went out with my sister and brother in law in the car and as he pulled up I said “don’t block the dropped curb.” as I could see he wasn’t trying to avoid it. He claimed it didn’t matter as it was unlikely to be a problem. Residential area, early evening, there was one “not far away.” Blah blah blah.
It wasn’t until I pointed out to him that I wouldn’t be able to get on the path if he blocked it that he said “I never thought of that.” and moved.

Actually even had trouble on pavements this week. Had mattress dumped on pavement that had fallen down so had go down road go 50 metres to get back up. On way home took long way around other side of road to go passed home and double back but a wheelie bin had been out opposite a tree and I couldn’t move it. So also had go on road on way back on opposite side. People no idea constant planning and pain in neck it is when people don’t think
