I have my smear next wednesday. I have no childcare so have to take my son with me. He is nearly 2 (21 months). I pretty sure its ok, but I feel a tiny bit weird about it.

FWIW im a practice nurse and do a lot of smear exams, and would have no issues with this if this scenario happened in one of my clinics. Its very different when you're the patient though!

Absolutely fine, strap him in the pushchair, make sure he has something to entertain him and crack on.
What isn't ok is him running around the room (you know this though as you're a practice nurse Grin)

It's fine, I bet I happens all the time. I've definitely done similar before.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 09/01/2022 13:28

Oh yeah, he'd be strapped in a pushchair and given a tablet to occupy him!

Perfect solution. You know he's there, he knows you're there, he's entertained for the short time the test will take, maybe even this young taking in the fact that it's sensible and normal to go to your checkups.

My surgery wouldn't allow my child in the room. There was no-one free to chaperone him so I was refused my appointment.
Are you absolutely certain the surgery will be ok with it?

purpleme12 · 09/01/2022 14:08

I've taken my child to my smear test. It was before she started school. We closed the curtains but she was obviously there. I didn't have any problems and neither did the nurse with it

MissisBee · 09/01/2022 15:00

I brought my son (then 2) when I got my coil removed!

SummerLovin2022 · 09/01/2022 15:23

It's fine, bring your son.

Hugasauras · 09/01/2022 15:27

I brought DD to my last one. No issues!

I've taken my baby or toddler to all my doctor and dentist appts in the last year and never had an issue. I suppose it's worth checking beforehand though.
CrumpledCrumpet · 09/01/2022 15:36

I remember my GP offering to do my smear when I was in with my newborn for another reason - I’d taken him in the sling so had to hold the baby in my arms at the same time as getting the smear.

Oneearringlost · 09/01/2022 15:59

I've done smear tests with the mum lying with her baby or toddler her chest!
What I couldn't deal with is a toddler running around the consulting room

BigRedDuck · 09/01/2022 16:02

Absolutely no problem at all!
