Stupid question about when this ‘midnight’ is

Have an operation scheduled for Tuesday, have to be in hospital at 8am.

The letter I received today said to fast “from midnight the night before your operation”

So is that either
A. The minute after 23.59pm on Sunday
B. The minute after 23.59pm on Monday

So fasting for either 8 hours or 32 hours?
It’s bum surgery BTW. If that makes a difference.

I'd read it as B - 2359 on Monday.

But yes, I can understand the confusion. Maybe ring the hospital and double check?

edwinbear · 08/01/2022 22:49

B - I’ve never heard of anyone fasting for 32 hrs before surgery!

Bluebiscuits · 08/01/2022 22:49

8 hours

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 08/01/2022 22:50

8 hrs, it's mainly because they want you to have an empty stomach to prevent you vomiting during surgery when under anaesthetic.

GunsNShips · 08/01/2022 22:50

8 hours for sure.

Luckyelephant1 · 08/01/2022 22:50

It's definitely 8 hours. You don't need to fast for 32 hours!!

TracyMosby · 08/01/2022 22:51

B

Skullycup45 · 08/01/2022 22:51

It's fasting from Monday night if your operation is on Tuesday.

edwinbear · 08/01/2022 22:52

And don’t forget that being in hospital for 8am doesn’t mean surgery at 8am, if you’re 2nd or 3rd on the list, you might not go down until lunchtime, so even longer fasting.

SirChenjins · 08/01/2022 22:52

8 hours!!!

Bimblybomeyelash · 08/01/2022 22:53

B

8hrs of fasting is the norm.

Are they doing a scope? Usually, you'd need to take meds to clear everything out beforehand, or do you mean an op on the outside of your bum?

Sorry no it’s B.

If it's just for the anaesthetic, it will be 8 hours. If it's surgery requiring a clear gut, it'll be a full day of nothing but clear liquids.

Are you taking any laxatives before the surgery?

AsYouWishButtercup · 08/01/2022 23:06

Thank you for that 😂 I get hangry easily so was NOT looking forward to 32 hours of fasting 🤣 I believe I’m having an enema. And YY I know it’s just admitted at 8am and waiting about until they’re ready for me. Will download movies to Netflix

Midnight is at the end of the day, so 8 hours

Sunbird24 · 08/01/2022 23:34

It’s the last midnight before you’re supposed to turn up at the hospital. I’ve got surgery on Friday so can eat up til midnight Thursday night, then sips of water up to 6am Friday and nothing after that.

MrsMadderRose · 09/01/2022 00:03

B, I've had the same situation.
