Can indigestion even last this long?

I had dinner later than normal last night and woke up at 1am with really terrible indigestion. My dinner felt like it was in my throat, my chest was hurting and I felt like I was going to be sick.

I went into the living room so I could remain sitting up and barely slept for the rest of the night as the pain continued.

Today, I haven't been able to stomach anything and I still have the feeling of food being right up to my throat. I've had indigestion before but this is very unusual for the feeling to last so long. I can still feel the burn in my throat and don't feel like I could possibly lay down comfortably tonight either.

Any tips on how to ease the pain, is it even possible it is indigestion a whole day later? The only other thing I'm thinking is whether it might be gallstones as I have a pain under my ribs on the right hand side too but the pain isn't as I've seen it described when I've googled.

Sounds like gallstones from my experience.

Seeline · 08/01/2022 22:34

Have you tried something like gaviscon?

itwasntaparty · 08/01/2022 22:37

What have you take. To ease it?

@DustyMaiden, would you mind telling me about your experience?

I have been feeling full up and bloated all the time and have developed a constant pain under my right hand ribs. (However, I've also put on a lot of weight since lockdown and haven't been eating at all healthily so am not sure how much is just being obese discomfort....)

We have a family history (all the women at about 40) of gallstones but everything I've read says it's a sudden painful attack whereas the rib pain and fullness has been pretty constant for a while

Actually, I haven't taken anything to try to ease it. I feel so sick today that I've barely managed to drink.

It sounds ridiculous now you've pointed it out but I never think of medicating anything, I'll look and see if I have anything now.

Could be gallstones... I had symptoms that I didn't realise was gall stones. Back pain, reduced appetite with sickness after a rich meal...had it removed when inflamed. On a drip for a week, terrible pain.

Cahu58 · 08/01/2022 22:44

I had mild symptoms for about 2 years leading up to emergency surgery.

Its gallbladder. It's time to go for your scan and get the bugger out.

Or you'll find yourself crying, puking into a bucket a few times.

I will share that when an attack happened for me, I leaned over a puffy, jamming the edge under my ribs. It kept it bareable somewhat. For bed I used the back of the settee to wedge under my ribs and a pile of pillows for my head. Uncomfortable but it worked.

everything I've read says it's a sudden painful attack

That simply isn't true at all. Sounds like a gallbladder issue to me. It may not be stones, it may be that your gallbladder is "dying", and it's functionality is decreasing. That's what happened to me. Had it removed and I'm great now.

Snozzlemaid · 08/01/2022 22:51

I had gallstones and had a few biliary colic episodes which is the most pain I've ever been in. Luckily each attack only lasted about an hour.
But for the last few months before I had my gallbladder out I had constant discomfort and a dull ache/pain most days.
So it's not always the searing pain of a biliary colic attack.
I would speak to your GP when you can.

I don't want to be "that" poster, but definitely get it checked out.

I have a relative die of pancreatic cancer. Their symptoms were all the symptoms of indigestion, back pain etc.

Something else to consider is yur diet. If your gallbladder is an issue, high fat and unhealthy food will make it worse. You may be able to ease your symptoms somewhat by eating a bit healthier.

itwasntaparty · 08/01/2022 23:25

Get it checked out but start
Off with an antacid or theee. If you don't have any a teaspoon of bicarbonate in a glass of water will help, might make you puke though...

If you're in pain why wouldn't you take something to alleviate?

DustyMaiden · 08/01/2022 23:30

Rib pain, fullness, feeling sick. Lasted up to 24 hrs. Feeling of something stuck in throat. Would often start after going to bed.
Helped by drinking water, chewing everything really well. Low fat diet.

I've had a couple of episodes of this recently too, the pain of the heartburn and full feeling in the throat was so bad I was sick

I don't even have a gallbladder anymore after having "classical" gallstones, so now a bit freaked out about worse things!
