Ludo board game?

I used to play Ludo with friends and family all the time when I was a young child (1990s) back home. My board had Ludo on one side and Snakes & Ladders on the other. We moved to the US in my later school years and have been living here since. I have never heard anyone mention Ludo in the US in all these years, with the exception of a few Indian expat families! It has made me wonder -- is Ludo still common back in the UK? (Of course kids these days prefer their tablets to actual board games...)

We bought it for our family this Christmas! A lovely wooden board with Ludo on one side and Snakes & Ladders on the other. From Mark's and Spencers.
Our three and a half year old loves it, we've played it most days since Christmas. Smile

I play ludo with the children I look after, they also enjoy playing frustration which is a popular board game, with the same rules as ludo.

I used to play Ludo and snakes and ladders with my parents and grandparents when I was young, in the 1950era ! I doubt my two grandsons, aged 16 and 12 have ever played the same games..

Star555 · 08/01/2022 19:11

I remember reading about the kids playing Ludo in an Enid Blyton book (probably Famous Five) so indeed it must have been very popular in the 40s and 50s!

We play Ludo as a family - it’s great fun - two teens here.

I had a ludo board in a games compendium from ikea. Also ludo types game called "pop n' hop" and "sorry" is basically the same game. I've seen a frozen themed variant too

You can get the set still in John Lewis. Wooden board, snakes and ladders on one side, ludo on the other. We had it for Christmas and have been enjoying playing it.

I've always wondered what Parcheesi was!

I have a Ludo app and play against the computer several times a day. Me and dh often play each other as well.

I absolutely love Ludo, it's my favourite board game 😄

Is Frustration not the modern day equivalent of ludo?

Is Frustration not the modern day equivalent of ludo?

Yes, it is 😃

@JacquelineCarlyle

Is Frustration not the modern day equivalent of ludo?
Yes. They have the same game board layout - I have a copy of both games.
Carpetmoth · 08/01/2022 20:08

I think some of the more recent ones look different as my Frustration is from the 80s/ 90s.

Pipersouth · 08/01/2022 20:10

We have a T. rex game that is just a dinosaur version of ludo

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 08/01/2022 20:24

I liked the dice in the plastic bubble that you had to press in Frustration. Oh, man it felt so good pressing it 😆

Moonlaserbearwolf · 08/01/2022 20:31

Mine had a Frozen version which they played a few times when they were younger. It's definitely still around. But there are some more interesting variations, like the one with rabbits where you turn a carrot and they can fall through a hole in the hill. Essentially a pumped-up version of Ludo which my children played for hours.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 08/01/2022 20:33

DS was given ludo for his 6th birthday recently and loves it (although the rules are somewhat flexible depending upon his mood).we also played frustration, which is similar, over Christmas when staying with family.

Star555 · 08/01/2022 20:52

Wow, I seem to be behind the times! I have never heard of Frustration; just looked it up and it's apparently called Trouble in the US (never heard of that either). The dice-in-a-bubble idea is interesting: no losing the dice, no cheating as my grandpa (bless his soul) used to do in a comedic manner so I could catch him at it and have a laugh.

We used to play Ludo, but it's not one my dc have been majorly into.

They prefer Cluedo, Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders or just plain card games.

Caramellatteplease · 09/01/2022 08:53

Dice in bubbles are fun to press but all the ones I've tried have trouble actually changing the number properly. You are way most likely to get the same number, more likely to get a number one turn from the number you are on and virtually never get the number on the opposite side. Some are better than others and it Might not bother some people but it drove the mathematician in me nuts, it just wasn't fair!!!
