You need a VPN. Try Surfshark.

Sarahlou63 · 07/01/2022 18:24

filmon.com - cheap subscription with no need for a VPN.

adriftabroad · 07/01/2022 18:26

Thank you so much both!

We use IPTV, and a downloaded app. (Smarters pro) the app is free,
The iptv is 10€ a month and we get all the uk channels and catch up.

adriftabroad · 07/01/2022 18:31

Brilliant, resarching now. Thankyou.

You can’t legitimately receive them in Spain, however there are an enormous of criminals who offer access to overseas channels as a means of funding their other criminal activity, usually with very legitimate looking websites.

Both ITV and BBC (amongst other broadcasters) take action to track down these people, often finding homes full of AV equipment receiving signals from around the world being sold on for great profit.

Occasionally they are successful in prosecuting them, and the services suddenly go dark. Unfortunately however it is a game of whack-a-mole, and there is always someone else willing to offer the same illegal service.

adriftabroad · 07/01/2022 18:37

I thought that Nesbro I wanted to do it legally if possible.

I just have a chromebook and thought I might be able to buy a subscription.

BaronessBomburst · 07/01/2022 18:47

Using a dodgy service like Nesbo describes also risks you sharing all your own data with the criminals.
VPNs are much safer and legal. And I thought watching iPlayer on a tablet was too, although I'm not au fait with the current licensing laws.

BertieBotts · 07/01/2022 18:54

There's no truly legal way to do it as officially you need a TV licence, but a VPN is the most ethical way.

If you're in the right part of Spain I believe you might be able to pick up sky TV with a satellite dish pointed in the right direction. You then need a UK sky subscription, box and card (or however they do it now, I might be out of date)

adriftabroad · 07/01/2022 18:56

@BaronessBomburst yes, thank you. I am looking at surfshark now. It looks great and reliable and cheap. It has a special offer right now!

I am terrible with these things, would you mind telling me how I download torrents? (Once I have the VPN) Someone suggested EZTV to me in the UK?

I'm in the dark about all of this.

adriftabroad · 07/01/2022 18:58

Thanks @BertieBotts. Not allowed a satellite in my flat!

VPNs are a grey area. There are still rights clearance issues. With the BBC, the content is meant to be accessed by UK licence fee payers. If you are paying the licence fee but happen to be abroad, then using a VPN is technically wrong but I would say morally ok.

If however you don’t pay the licence fee but you still want to enjoy the programmes (or you are prepared to pay a bunch of criminals to let you watch the programmes), then morally that is a bit shit.

adriftabroad · 07/01/2022 19:02

I agree @Nesbo. Just got divorced and have to be out here until DD is 18.

Trying to save my sanity, I want everything as above board as possible. I tried to join C4 last night... nope!

I don't want bloody Netflix. I want TGGBO!

OP posts:
BaronessBomburst · 08/01/2022 11:46

You don't need to download torrents. Just use iPlayer.

BorsetshireBanality · 08/01/2022 11:51

You could get the ITV hub or Britbox legally before the Brexit deadline of 31 December 2020, but not now.

Another thing that Brexit has ruined for expats!

BertieBotts · 08/01/2022 19:57

If you don't know what you're doing, don't get involved with torrents. They are technically file sharing which means you can get into legal bother for it.

VPNs to access catch up services are the best and least dodgy way to do it. Not all VPN services are run by criminals. It's still not 100% legal because of licensing as someone else said and because you're essentially fraudulently claiming a different location, but morally that's a bit of a grey area. You're very unlikely to get into any trouble using one, just avoid the free services, go for a reputable one.

That said, bake off is popular worldwide, and might be available legally somehow.

BertieBotts · 08/01/2022 19:58

You can't pay a licence fee from abroad anyway so it's a bit of a silly argument.

adriftabroad · 09/01/2022 09:43

Thank you so much to everyone.

Especially @BaronessBomburst, I am currently watching 'Saturday Kitchen' and am the happiest I have been for 6 months! I mean that. I have been very lonely out here and this will keep me feeling connected to England, until I can come back.

I paid for a very good VPN and it works a charm.

New Year, new start.

Thank you so much for explaining to me. Very glad not to be trying to download torrents etc...

@adriftabroad if it stops working (they sometimes do) PM me and I'll let you know which one to switch to. We live abroad too and my very techy DH has it all sussed.

adriftabroad · 09/01/2022 12:57

Thank you! Will do. Paying month by month incase this happens.

Fingers crossed!

OP posts:
BaronessBomburst · 09/01/2022 12:58

Also bare in mind that some apps won't work with a VPN so you might have to switch it off. For example, DH has a VPN on his phone and if it's on he can't use his Corona pass app.

BaronessBomburst · 09/01/2022 12:59

We pay monthly too for exactly that reason.

Shmithecat2 · 09/01/2022 13:00

Get a decent VPN and a firestick. We lived in the ME for 8 years and watched TV like that.
