Home Kits to re-plate White Gold jewellery

Hi

My engagement/wedding/eternity rings are white gold so gradually yellow and need to be re-plated. It doesn't happen too often but given I have 3, if I take to a jeweller, it costs > £100.

Has anyone bought a kit to do this at home similar to this one?

Were you happy with the results?

Find a new jeweller - my wedding ring and engagement ring cost me £30 for the pair at a small jeweller in Plymouth

Before buying anything, cover the rings in Colgate toothpaste and leave over night. Wash off in the morning and look at the difference. I honestly thought it was nonsense but I accidentally wore my eternity ring in the hot tub and the chemicals turned it yellow gold. My friend mentioned the toothpaste trick and I didn’t believe her and took my ring to a couple of jewellers who wanted £100 ish (gold is expensive right now) so I tried toothpaste as a “nothing to lose” approach and it bloody worked! Saved me £100.

I’ve tried a range of jewellers both before and after we moved half way across the country. All seem to want £30 per ring at least (and a lot send the rings away. I’d rather have them done on site).

Perhaps it's an aberration in pricing here. These guys had my rings back to me in a couple of hours.

So, tried it last night and it’s made no difference whatsoever 🤣🤣

Was it a particular type of toothpaste you used (e.g. the old fashioned white type as opposed to gel?)

Why is it a problem for them to be sent away?
I had 2 rings replated and significantly resized and it cost £85 in total.
If you are anywhere near the Cotswolds I’ll give you the name of the Jeweller!

CHEM20 · 09/01/2022 21:49

Risk of them going missing I guess.

I wish I were near The Cotswolds! That sounds like a good price.

Did you buy the kit for home? I am thinking of getting it!

CHEM20 · 08/06/2025 14:20

No, I haven't yet - still a bit nervous.

I've been doing a lot of work/hobbies where I can't wear my rings, so they're safely stored away at the moment and have been out of sight/out of mind.

Still curious if anyone else has tried it though!
