Hello can anyone help recommend dance classes but not ballet, or street dance.
She's got really good rhythm and is very physical and movey child. Ballet is too slow for her but what can I enrol her in that's going to teach some basics.. Be fast moving thank you

My 9 year old niece does freestyle dancing. She absolutely loves it. It’s definitely fast moving, she’s always throwing herself all over the show 😆 It’s really helped grow her confidence too

Street dance?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/01/2022 12:57

Ballroom and Latin? Ten different dances, so plenty of variety.

Musical theatre has a big dance component if she'd consider that.

Also, not exactly dance, but my 10 and 8yos have recently taken up aerial circus skills (trapeze, circus silks etc) which is quite dance-like as it involves moving to music.

@Stompythedinosaur

Silly question but if she did that would she learn proper steps? (musical theatre)

Cheerleading

Alternatively highland, majorette, tap, disco, acrobatics, ballroom

Irish dancing? I teach irish dancing and she sounds just like the sort of kids who I teach who enjoy it and do well.

Depends what you mean by proper steps - dd1 certainly learns dance steps that have names, but there isn't much focus on whether a step is from a specific style of dance, if that makes sense.

Tap dancing or Jazz?

AdaColeman · 07/01/2022 15:13

Tap is lots of fun, very active, and you learn a lot about being part f a team.

blackteaplease · 07/01/2022 15:15

Jazz, tap or modern

Adamsants · 07/01/2022 15:20

Tap..my dd 12 loves it!

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/01/2022 15:23

Tap
Contemporary

Comefromaway · 07/01/2022 15:27

Modern or jazz

Newyearoldyou · 07/01/2022 17:02

What I mean by proper steps is like ballet gives the grounding in deportment, grace etc.. Something like that, the foundation.

There are specific syllabi and exams available in a wide range of dance genres. After ballet, tap and modern are probably the next most popular classes offered by the majority of dance schools for children around your DD's age. Some of the big dance organisations have syllabi for other genres like hip hop and acro too, but you might find it more difficult to find a class as they're less common.
I'd probably suggest a modern/jazz class as there's quite a variety of styles included. Personally I'd look for someone teaching either the ISTD modern theatre or IDTA contemporary modern jazz syllabi, though there are lots of other options. Not doing ballet may prove a disadvantage if she sticks at it though as ballet is really the foundation of most dance styles but you can cross that bridge if/when you come to it.

DD does musical theatre, some steps she does come from ballet but in general it is very similar to any musical dance you seen in stage.

She loves it, she would have hated ballet as too restrictive. She enjoys that it is a mix of dance and singing while engaging with others,

Her school also does jazz and modern, that’s more structured dance styles but again, not DD’s favourite.

Cheerleading may be another option.

Modern & traditional jazz definitely gives you that
