Can I cook a cottage pie now and heat it up Sunday?

Just that really.
I'm about to cook a very basic cottage pie with a grated cheese crust for DP to heat up on Sunday when he has his kids.
Will this work ?
Will it go soggy ?
Should I leave the cheese off ?
Any tips for cooking in advance? I've never done it before.
He also somehow wants me to Mash and add Carrots to conceal them somehow, as kids don't ear veg...

Help?

Of course that would work.
And You could soften some veg separately then blend it so you can stir into the mince unnoticed ? I have a couple of children’s cook books that suggest this for fussy eaters and sometimes use it myself as ours don’t like courgette if they spot it

So should I just prepare the mince, put it in the dish, add the mash on top and then stop there ?
He can then " cook " for 30 mins on Sunday?
I shouldn't do the cooking in the oven bit no ?

Yes absolutely, cool it properly after cooking, cover it and put it in the fridge. It will be fine for Sunday.

For concealed veg, add cauliflower to potato, just boil in the same pan and mash, you really can't tell!

Thank you!!!
Should I tell him to add the cheese Sunday or do that before putting it in the fridge?

You can add the cheeses now if you want. If it's very big con with foil over at first then remove for the last 20 minutes

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 07/01/2022 13:08

*cook with foil

Mmmm! I love cottage pie a day or two after I've made it, always tastes better Grin

AuditAngel · 07/01/2022 18:05

I think it will need more than 30 minutes to heat it, we had leftover cottage pie reheated for 30 minutes and it wasn’t warm enough.

@Moff2k

Thank you!!! Should I tell him to add the cheese Sunday or do that before putting it in the fridge?
Ok I’ve tried to hold my tongue but presumably this man manages to hold down a job! I’m sure he can figure out cheese grating.
Stillcrikey · 07/01/2022 18:10

I batch cook cottage pies. Assemble them and then freeze the ones I don’t need immediately. Then defrost and bung in oven to finish as required.
Word of warning re defrosting - mashed potato is a better insulator than the stuff they use in the space shuttle - takes bloody ages to thaw out.

Sorry that your partner doesn't have opposable thumbs and can't do this for himself. It will be fine made in advance though.

Moff2k · 07/01/2022 20:55

He can do it himself, I'm just doing something nice for him?
Is that not OK anymore , to do nice things for men or people we love ?

Ok it's cottage pie time. I didn't add the cheese before I left, shall I tell him to add the cheese at the start or halfway through?
It's going to need heating for about 40 mins on 180 so I don't want it to burn ?
Thoughts please ?
