What would you do if an EMP went off?

How would it affect your life?
How would it affect your job?

My job would be obsolete.

Online shopper. No internet means no customers can place their orders.

No internet means the shop can’t see if it’s in stock or now.

No internet, no productions, and no working factories would mean a lot of our food would have to come from smaller shops.

No car would mean I would struggle to get to the supermarket even if they managed to get some form of system going

Home life for me would be dull. No Tv, no WiFi etc. I would be bored.

This thread is showing changes in mumsnet 😂

Do none of you have a zombie plan and an OhFuckRucksack?
EMP puts paid to the steal a ship plan though…

DuckonaBike · 07/01/2022 20:48

Ah, let’s look on the bright side. Maybe it won’t happen.

FindingMeno · 07/01/2022 21:49

@TheDrsDocMartens I have an OFRS and couldn't decide between Sark and the ship.

I’m thinking the bigger ships won’t work so needing sail power.

Depends. Would there even be water available? No heat, no light, no water, no sewage pumps. No trucks delivering food. No hospital equipment, few doctors, nurses, carers getting to work anyhow.

I work in a pharmacy, existing stock is pretty much "just in time" delivery. I may need to borrow a shotgun whilst the supplies dwindle.

(Or more likely open the cupboard of "good stuff" and go out with a party)

Well, I thought this grey and cold January was miserable enough already, but this thread has dropped it to a new low.

You could have waited until Easter, op. I'd be fretting less about the lack of a boiler and tumble dryer.

Do you think we'll get any warning at all? Enough time for an emergency Ocado order?

liveforsummer · 08/01/2022 13:03

@RedWB

Firstly I’d laugh my arse off at all the idiots who’ve ripped up their gardens and put plastic grass down Wink

Lolz at people saying they’d be bored. You wouldn’t have any time to be bored, that food ain’t gonna grow itself, the wood needs chopping, you’d be walking miles every day to trade and barter food & tools. Boredom would be a luxury

Sounds more fun that going to work tbf. Might quite enjoy it but I'd be pissed when people started coming to steal my garden veg

@SpiderinaWingMirror

Well I always have 12 Tins of tomatoes in stock. After that I would starve.

Join me in the world of book reading. There are so many books out there, so even if printing is stopped for now, there is still plenty for everyone to read.

stairgates · 08/01/2022 15:16

I love thinking about things like this!Grin It would turn crazy quickly if the water got switched off!

BertieBotts · 08/01/2022 15:42

This was absolutely brilliant, if anyone can find a copy of it to watch I'd love to see them again.

GrinGrin That’s hilarious. The society is breaking down and destroying everything and mankind are at a threat and you’ve gone “could I get an emergency Ocado order”

Is this one from YouTube @BertieBotts?

IncompleteSenten · 08/01/2022 17:06

I'd die.
I'm dependent on medical equipment.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 08/01/2022 17:16

I live by the sea and walking distance to everywhere I'd need to get to.
I could still teach but would miss my powerpoints. If school didn't continue then I'd go ransack the cupboards in my lab and pinch the liebig condenser and use it to desalinate sea water so at least Dd and I would have drinkable water. Potentially move into the school if we can still use the gas etc I suppose.
Other than that the area I lived in once had a thriving fishing industry and there is plenty of fertile farm land. I'd imagine it could be tended to using traditional technologies / traditional fishing boats the population is just a lot bigger than it used to be.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 08/01/2022 17:21

If this actually happened (and assuming no nuclear bomb accompanying), wouldn't it only knock things out for a short time? Or is the idea that it fries everything, it's not just a question of turning everything off and back on again.

If it's the former, I think the suicide pill sounds appealing Sad

If it's the latter, most of us would be ok.

DGRossetti · 08/01/2022 17:31

You'd need a fucktonne of energy to cause a worrisome EMP. That's why they tend to be associated with nuclear explosions. I don't think it's something your local terrorists could manage.

They can fry a lot of unhardened modern electronics (which explains why my eyes water at the price of military kit). Anyone running with valve kit is probably OK. (All of a sudden the USSRs old-style tech in the 70s and 80s makes more sense).

It would certainly be an "interesting" way to find out how dependent we all are on intertwined modern tech.

When the Great Storm of 87 hit London, and my walkman radio was just picking up static (entire grid was off for about an hour) I did briefly think we'd been hit by nuclear strike as I woke about 3am with the wind howling and tiles crashing.

Actually, maybe it was a nuclear strike, and my consciousness is trapped in a Jacobs Ladder (see the film) hinterland ? Bit depressing this is what I came up with Grin.

The whole topic was covered in quite good detail in "Electronics Today International" in the early 80s. They also had a project to build a geiger counter ...

Vampirethriller · 08/01/2022 17:38

I have a gas camping stove, a huge amount of dried and pickled food, an allotment and would make a bonfire when the gas ran out. We'd have to camp on the allotment but in those circumstances I can't see the council getting upset about it.
I have a long running zombie/apocalypse story in my head to get me to sleep at nights, I find it very calmingGrin
