Any ideas apart from Lego, which he loves but finds hard to do solo ? Would preferred to get a toy type thing.

Magnatiles are good as a Lego alternative.

bebanjo · 07/01/2022 11:21

Playdogh

Fidget toys are meant to help with fine motor skills. Spinners, fiddle cubes, those pop-it things.

Shrinkles- you colour it in, cut it out then microwave it. It shrinks down and looks great, even if your art work is not! The cutting and colouring are skills, and the shrinking is motivation.

Fimo clay is more grown up than play dough. Same idea.

Scratch art, as well.

Hama beads, my 7 year old does loads of these to help with fine motor :)

Drunkpanda · 07/01/2022 11:32

Is it for a birthday? If so just get him something he'd like rather than something helpful! If specifically for motor skills, there are easier versions of Lego, can't remember the name. I can't imagine being able to build a Lego set alone at 6.

TeenPlusCat · 07/01/2022 11:32

Hama beads come in 3 different sizes. The default size is the smallest (mini). Also in maxi and midi (I think).

Robinkitty · 07/01/2022 11:34

There’s a game with lots of little shapes that you put into the holes before the timer goes off and then they all jump out… I can’t remember the name but all of my children have loved that.. might be someone else who can remove what it’s called?

Robinkitty · 07/01/2022 11:35

Tobar time shock ( I googled)

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/01/2022 11:41

I agree with Hama beads .
Knitting?

TeenPlusCat · 07/01/2022 11:42

Plastic meccano?

Knex? (my DDs both with motor issues got on better with Knex than lego)

Has their parent asked for something to help with motor skills? If not maybe play to child's strengths rather than giving something potentially very frustrating.

Drunkpanda · 07/01/2022 11:53

My son has poor fine motor skills and we ended up with large amounts of untouched Hama beads Grin If he found it hard he didn't want to play with it.

LIZS · 07/01/2022 11:58

Knex, Puzzles, logic games like Rush Hour , Jenga , 3d marble maze

bigbluebus · 07/01/2022 12:28

Magnetix or Geomag. My DS used to play with his a lot at that age.

My DS had no trouble with Lego at 6 but now at 9 still finds the plastic meccano tricky and needs help.

A PP talked about an easier version of Lego - I think you're thinking of Lego Junior, they do have some good kits which are easier than the "mainstream" ones.

ijustdontknowabout · 07/01/2022 16:30

Yes my SIL has asked for something to help if I can come up with it. She thinks I know stuff as I have 2 children I have a DS similar age but he dislikes most toys, so not much help and my other child is 2 loves anything TV character despite my best efforts to get her into wholesome stuff !

DD had difficulties with fine motor skills and hated beads, HAMA or anything fiddly, she would do it for 10 minutes and left it then. She would have hated getting them for her birthday.

She got into drawing with paint by numbers and other colouring. books plus porcelaine or wood paint projects.

Femo is also nice as you can do something with it to keep compared to playdoh.

MarthaJonesPhone · 07/01/2022 18:19

B-Toys, snap beads, my DS loves them, the beads can be used to make little figures, jewellery anything really, they're very tactile.

100problems · 07/01/2022 18:35

A really cool pair of sneakers with laces so he wants to wear them and learns to do the laces too.

Jigsaw puzzles

Skittles

Quoits

Scissors and fun things to cut like playdoh, those paint colour strips you get in diy shops, straws.

Balls for throwing and catching, those indoor basket ball hoops are useful - buy juggling balls as they don’t bounce everywhere.
