Las Vegas Tips

Hi, I'm going to Las Vegas (fingers crossed) at the end of October. I've checked the weather and it says around 21degrees and I know there will be a lot of walking involved. What shoes do I wear? Any advice or tips are greatly welcomed!

Comfy trainers should be fine!

We’re hoping to go in April (🤞🏼) and we’ve never been before either.

QforCucumber · 06/01/2022 20:59

Comfortable trainers, we went in a February and it was cooler, jeans T-shirt and thin jackets were fine though. It’s very casual, all the time. No need for dress up and heels unless you’re going clubbing. We averaged around 30-40k steps a day. Everything looks close together but it’s the walking in and out and also the sheer sizes of the hotels which gives you the mileage.

I'm very jealous. Loved Vegas. Take really really REALLY comfortable shoes...I can't tell you just HOW much walking there is. Try and book a helicopter trip over the Grand Canyon as well. Vegas is amazing

Emmas85 · 06/01/2022 21:03

Thanks! I am very excited (hence the super early planning 😊)

Absolutely agree on taking comfortable shoes! I made the mistake of wearing sandals on the first day and oh my god the blisters I got from all the walking totally ruined the rest of my trip as my whole feet were in agony!
Also agree about booking helicopter to Grand Canyon- that was my highlight of the whole trip!
Honestly you will love it, I am so jealous!

Blister plasters although nearly every shop we went to sold them don’t plan on eating more than twice a day the food portions are massive! Don’t worry about getting into the time zone just stick with what’s comfortable everything is 24hours. Also if something is 2-3 hotels up the strip expect it to take ages it took us 15 mins to get from our room to get our breakfast. Oh and enjoy it it’s amazing.

How exciting, its amazing to have holiday planning to do, especially after so long without holidays abroad currently. Absolutely you should be planning this early, only 10 months to go!! Grin I have been in October, it was warm enough to wear shorts/dresses but with a cardigan, or jeans and a t-shirt. I took a comfy pair of cowboy boots (cos it's the desert!) and a pair of trainers so I could keep swapping. We took a bus to the grand canyon, it took hours and hours but we quite liked seeing all the little towns in between and had about 3 hours once there, it was so breath taking and peaceful looking out across it. I loved the strip, its like being on the set of a film where nothing is quite real, and just spending time wandering around the hotels looking at everything and hopping on a cheap machine in a casino if we wanted a free cocktail! The stories about there being no windows or exit signs in the casinos are true, the doors are all slightly out of sight from the floor and if you ask the staff the way out they try to offer you a drink or game! We didn't get to the old town though and wished we had as we drove through it on the way out of town at night and it looked very cool. Have a great break! x

Definitely take blister patches and comfy trainers. I bloody love Vegas, its amazing fun, like Disney world for adults!!

We took a helicopter and had a champagne lunch at the bottom of the grand canyon, went to a shooting range, Went to a few shows, the cirque ones are astounding, and ate a lot of really good food!

  • Hire a car and drive to red rock canyon and mount Charleston
  • visit the Grand Canyon but go to the side that's furthest away ( I can't remember what it's called but it's not the one with the glass viewing platform). We did a tour who picked us up from our hotel and provided lunch etc.
  • do a cowboy ride with this company (the absolute best part of our holiday)

  • deffo wear comfy shoes. The hotels are massive and absolutely miles apart!
Pinkginlover · 06/01/2022 22:36

Definitely take comfy shoes/trainers.
We did a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon one morning then did white water rafting on the Colorado river in the afternoon.
The Hoover dam is worth a visit as is Red Rock canyon.
Downtown Las Vegas is good for a visit too.

Was just in Vegas the beginning of December and had a great time.
Definitely comfortable shoes, we were walking upwards of 30000 steps a day, even just popping to a neighbouring hotel is a trek (in a good way)
We drove to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and stayed overnight in a little cabin which was lovely.
Would also recommend the cirque shows, we saw love this trip at the mirage, if you look on smartervegas.com you can often find discount codes

The buffets.. hopefully post covid they will still be as fabulous. My favourites were the mandalay Bay, and the Paris.

Hard Rock Cafe and the Harley Davison bar are good.

The overhead screens in downtown fremont Street are great

The best time to wall up and down the strip is at night when the bellagio fountains are lit up and all the other lights.

Mudday · 07/01/2022 05:04

There's really only two things you need to know about Vegas. 1. Always tip the bartender (Brits don't always get told this about the USA, but anyone who waits on you is paid eff all, and your tips keep them alive) so when you get your drink always have spare dollars; it's not worth getting this wrong, trust me because they will absolutely hate you and serve you last. 2. Don't stay in Vegas too long; ideally it should be a 3 day weekend, after 4/5 days it rapidly becomes a Dante inferno tour and after a week you're looking at Hieronymus Bosch-land. Good luck, am sure you'll have a great time! Hated the goddamn soulless place myself though....(was there for 10 days).

Mumdiva99 · 07/01/2022 06:58

Create a spreadsheet of what you want to do and plan. You want to makensure you group activities together that are near each other. E.g no point trying to donthe aquarium in mandalas Bay the same day as the Stratosphere tower.

If you are there for Halloween take an amazing costume and plan to be up late.

Prebook meals and buffets so you don't miss out.

Book a few shows/concerts.

Look for somewhere with a heated pool because while the weather will be pleasant walking around the wind can be cool.

Research everything. I loved the buffets - lobster and champagne and all you can eat sushi.

Have fun.

Thanks everyone! Smile

If visiting the Hoover Dam it's great to actually go inside. See the machinery working and you can take a photo looking back up the dam.

Red Rock Canyon is an easy trip from the strip, but also Valley Of Fire is good. Sunset helicopter ride to Grand Canyon is superb as you fly back as it's all lit up.

Lots of shows to see, mostly good.

Sunday buffets at some places are even more outrageous than the daily ones. I think it was Flamingo (back then) where the spread was ginormous and on Sunday they opened yet another room!
