Frequency of breastfeeding a 12 month old

Mummies who are still breastfeeding their 12 month olds and older; how often do your babies fed/feed?
Also I would like to slowly start weaning but not sure my little boy is ready. Any advice as to how I can start weaning?

Thank you

At 12 months I was only doing first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I'd been swapping feeds for snacks.

At about 8 months once they were eating some food I fixed bf to 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm (roughly). At 11 months the 11am was swapped for a snack. At 12 months the 3pm for a snack. At 13 months the 7pm for a cup.of cow's milk.and at 14 months the the 7am one for cow's milk.

I needed to have a pattern so I could plan weaning and mealtimes so I was regimented with it as early as I could be. Was bf on demand up to about 7 months but both settled to a 4-5 feeds a day by the by themselves.

DS is 12 months & is at nursery four days pw.

On those days, he has a feed at 7am, a cup of cows milk mid morning, an expressed bottle in the afternoon, a feed at 7pm & usually 1-2 in the night.

On the days at home with me, he gets one more in the day, and one less at night.

He’s on 3 meals a day plus at least one snack, and has pudding with all meals at nursery.

Kid is just permanently hungry!

I know he’s not ready to wean as nursery say he really gulps down his expressed milk & he gets so excited when I ask if he wants milk. I’d love for him to at least night wean though.

21 months - morning when wakes and evening for bed. Often for daytime nap but if I’m not around will go without.
LO asks for AM and PM feed.

Have you not started weaning at all?!

itwasntaparty · 06/01/2022 20:59

Are you not weaning your one year old at all or do you mean off the boob?

TulipVictory · 06/01/2022 21:16

I'm clearly doing something wrong here as my one year old still wants to feed a fair few times a day and then in the evening she wants to feed for ages to fall asleep

I think that's pretty normal if you breastfeed. 95% of my friends were still feeding at one year and most were feeding more than just morning and night if they were with the child during the day. OP my 11m old has a morning feed and bedtime feed plus a feed in the night and normally another feed in the day too. With my first, I actually cut the bedtime feed first. You just need to make a decision and stop offering at that time. They get used to it very quickly.

We were down to about 3 feeds a day but then I went back to work and DS responded by spending all night on my boob (to make up for days I presume). He managed to really ramp the supply back up and I had to hand express at work to relieve pressure.

Tay17 · 06/01/2022 21:29

You’re definitely not doing anything wrong!! That sounds totally normal! Mine was the same at that age & still feeds a couple of times a day now at 21 months

OKScarpetta · 06/01/2022 21:29

My little one is 11 months and has a feed first thing, then breakfast. If I’m at home with her, she has a mid-morning feed, in the afternoon and at bedtime. She sometimes wakes at night to have a quick feed. I think sometimes she just likes to snuggle and feed, and sometimes it’s because she’s bored!! Grin
When I’m working, she has one feed in the morning, a cup of oat milk in the morning/ afternoon and waits until I get back around 6:30pm. Then a “hello” feed, followed quickly by a “good night” feed and then off to sleep.
She sleeps through about 50% of the time, otherwise she has a quick feed around 3am for 20mins.

Try 'Don't offer, don't refuse'. So don't breastfeeding unless your DC asks for it. If they are busy during the day they will hopefully gradually lose interest.

Greenmarmalade · 06/01/2022 22:11

I remember mine really upped their requests for feeding at this age. You have to decide what you want to do and how often, really. You’ll decide when he weans. I fed mine between 20 months and 3 years. They’d have gone on for YEARS if I hadn’t stopped 😆

Katiesm · 07/01/2022 07:22

I meant weaning off boob. He eats 3 main meals a day and 2 healthy snacks and still asks for boob around 3/4 times a day and night feeds. Would love for night feeds to stop now but can’t seem to get him off as he loves his milk.

Thank you everyone! That’s really helpful

I was still on demand feeding both at that age and it was a lot throughout the day and night (too many feeds to count really), but also by that point even though I’d never go as long as 4 or 5 hours without if I was at home with them I knew they would be fine if I wasn’t there.

drinkwithanumbrellainit · 07/01/2022 07:28

First and last thing for me too at 12 months and then stopped at 13 or 14 months.

dreamygirl25 · 07/01/2022 07:33

I did don't offer don't refuse but I did drop the night feeds at around 12 months by sleeping elsewhere and getting dh to give him a bottle as it was draining me. Also one of the first feeds to drop was the bedtime one as he was 12 months and gave him a bottle of cows milk. At around 18 months he was having a 4pm feed which he eventually lost intrest in and then was all over! Good luck!
