Does the GP send a reminder when your coil needs redone?

I have sore boobs and dry mouth, assumed i was coming up to my period. DP commented that i wasnt due, and then said "you are not pregnant are you?"

I am now questioning my coil. It was put in in summer 2018. Does the GP send a reminder or am I supposed to know when it is up? Now shitting myself.

No I don't think think they give reminders
What sort of coil?
Mirena is ok for 5 years and I'm sure the copper coil lasts at least that long too

BendingSpoons · 06/01/2022 20:15

No they don't send reminders (mine doesn't anyway!). But they are 5 years, so you should have until summer 2023. So you should be fine fingers crossed!

DelurkingAJ · 06/01/2022 20:16

I didn’t get one, had to book a slot. You can check all your medical records now via the NHS app if you’re not sure of the date.

Jaydess lasts 3 years I think

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 06/01/2022 20:18

Nope and when I questioned it on here I got a complete telling off. I don’t know why a quick reminder would be tricky- most other stuff gets a nudge.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2022 20:19

Mine was put in at a family planning clinic rather than the GP. I was given a wee credit card sized card with the details so I'd know when it was to be removed

GozerTheGozerian · 06/01/2022 20:19

Nope. And I missed mine - lockdown, no doctor visits etc. Was a year out of date!! Agree it is so easy to send a reminder. They seem to manage it for smears, breast checks etc.

JustcameoutGC · 06/01/2022 20:23

Its a copper coil, so i should be ok. A reminder would be v helpful. Also, the details of what coil it was and when it was put it are not in the medical records i can access on line. Really not set up to be helpful.

Some copper coils last 10 years though. Would be helpful to know which one it was

JustcameoutGC · 06/01/2022 20:24

This dry mouth is making me super paranoid though.

Doesn't a copper coil last 10 years? I'm sure that's what I was told.

Same but I promptly lost the card.

I had to go through my calendar to see when I’d had it put in. Blush

Some are 5 and some are 10
Bagamoyo1 · 06/01/2022 20:30

Most coils last 5 years

Snozzlemaid · 06/01/2022 20:31

I got a reminder from my GP

FruitToast · 06/01/2022 20:33

It depends which one you had put in although I'm going to have to ring the family planning clinic. I'm absolutely sure I was told it was 3 years to get it replaced and I put it in my phone calendar to make an appointment 3 years later. GP receptionist are insisting it's 5 years but also can't see on my notes which one I had! Would just be so much easier if they just sent a reminder. It must be so easy to set up a text/email alert system.

Bagamoyo1 · 06/01/2022 20:33

Yeah GPs should send reminders because they’ve got nothing else to do.
And of course it’s completely impossible for a patient to write down the date they had a coil fitted and add 5 years.

Jaydess is 3 I think Mirena is 5 Copper is 5 or 10
Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 06/01/2022 20:46

I didn't get a reminder but I was told the mirena has now been okayed for 6 years instead of 5. Had mine changed couple weeks before xmas

I get text reminders for my dentist, my nail salon and my normal gp appointments.
I also run a business where we use them.

It takes zero time to set up as it’s automated through the booking system.

The gps wouldn’t be going through their Rolodexes texting people.

I got pregnant with the copper coil a couple years ago (miscarried as is common with coil pregnancies) they changed it just to be sure (was still in date) they had the details on my medical records despite me getting it done at a GUM style clinic. But no they don't send reminders.

The old ones do, the newer ones are a mix of 5 and 10
