I've booked 2 days in Weston super mare for my partners birthday in feb as a surprise, in a little cottage with a hot tub. Can anyone help with activities/things to do/ places to go/ restaurants etc? Im from Cornwall. We love adventure and having fun, like two big kids! Into our food but quite basic with our food taste haha!

www.mendipactivitycentre.co.uk/, lots of nice walks in the ,not far from weston

Strawberry0909 · 06/01/2022 21:04

Posted too soon! Weston isn't the best, I live not far, but fine for a base to explore , try this too www.visitsomerset.co.uk/things-to-do/activities/outdoor-pursuits/cheddar-gorge

Soundofshuna · 06/01/2022 21:04

We went for a walk there yesterday! There is a National trust car park just south with a walk along the point. Lovely fish and chips afterwards in Kewstoke I think you’ll have a great tome. What’s not to
Like about a weekend away in a cottage with a hot tub!

FreakinFrankNFurter · 06/01/2022 21:05

We had a night just outside Weston on route to Cornwall. We had fun as we were with 7 year old DS so went to the fair and the pier and had a walk along the sea front and towards Anchor Head.

It's not somewhere I'd go other than as a stop off.

We did go to a really good italian restaurant for lunch, Il Michelangelo

MrsJamesAcaster · 06/01/2022 21:08

Please just rebook somewhere else. Weston is awful.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/01/2022 21:09

If you are from Cornwall I don’t think you will like Weston. It’s very muddy. Very deprived and has an air of dereliction. That’s why Banksy created Dismaland there.

Go a bit further down the coast and find some sand.

Nousernameforme · 06/01/2022 21:12

Theres the See Monster art installation should be there by then. Revo is a nice new cafe/restaurant in the old aquarium opens late and is lovely sitting looking out at night when the tide is in. It also has a glow in the dark mini golf. Brunello lounge is quite nice. If you want Japanese food Ebisu is good and I've heard good things about Sakura. There was a nice italian Tarentellas though not certain it survived lockdown

Theres an iron age hill fort up in the woods, Sand bay is a nice walk but cold this time of year. Lock and Code is an escape room if your into that sort of thing.

GettingStuffed · 06/01/2022 21:12

For restaurants Il Michelangelo on the front right side up a bit when looking at the pier. It's nearly opposite Knightstone Island, not the cheapest but good value. Actually most of the hotels on the front do good food. I agree that it's way past its use by date but as DD lives there we go down regularly. There's a good Eastern European supermarket on Meadow Streer

Spindelina · 06/01/2022 21:12

Between Cornwall and north wales, I'd do Wye valley / Welsh marches / Herefordshire / Shropshire. Rural, nice towns with nice pubs, walking, castles etc - low key relaxing adulting. You could get a couple of nights in a pub with rooms, for example.

Nousernameforme · 06/01/2022 21:14

You're bloody autocorrect

Kite22 · 06/01/2022 21:14

Weston-Super_Mud is where Brummies go because it is the shortest journey they can make, to get to the sea.
If you are coming from Cornawall, I can't see WSM really having much to offer to you - sorry anyone who is from WSM. I mean, it serves Midlanders well for a day out at the seaside or a place for your Auntie's caravan, but isn't really a place you'd aspire to visit.

What about
Bristol or Bath ? Both lovely Cities for a weekend break with much more to do and see, and greater range of places to eat.
As mentioned above, Cardiff is also a nice City.

RunRunGingerbreadMan · 06/01/2022 21:17

It depends on what you want, WSM has had a little bit of a face lift in recent years and if you want a bit of fun in the arcades and on the pier and so on then it does the trick. I'm not sure I'd go there for a full holiday, but you can use it as a base for two nights with a decent view and travel around a bit if it's not your cup of tea. There's a Mexican restaurant on the front which isn't bad (or wasn't a couple of years ago anyway). It's not a place that's trying to be fancy or anything obviously, but there is still a touch of the old charm I think.

Howtotameyourtoddler · 06/01/2022 21:24

I'm local and WSM is the last place I'd go for a weekend away. It's grotty.

Loads of good suggestions for alternatives here. If you want the sea, Devon or Dorset are better. The Somerset coastline is basically just miles of glorified, muddy estuary. If being by the sea isn't essential, you could look at Exmoor or Dartmoor for somewhere more rural or secluded. You could probably find something nice around the Somerset Levels or the Mendips too. But personally, if I was having a romantic/treat weekend away around here, I'd book a hotel in Bath.

JojobaFromOctober · 06/01/2022 21:26

I grew up near WSM and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Bristol and Bath are much nicer. Even Clevedon if you specifically want to be by the sea. But all the sea around that area is brown and muddy. There are huge tidal ranges and very shallow sea for miles, which means it's more like a massive muddy puddle than anything. For ages I thought that the sea just was brown unless you went abroad.

I can't imagine someone from Cornwall going for a seaside break to Weston. I just think you'll be really disappointed.

The Mendips are really nice, though, lots of lovely walks to do in the area and Brean Down is cool (as is Sand Point which is similar but smaller and no fort).

YewandOak · 06/01/2022 21:30

I live in Weston-s-Mare. It's grim.Tatty.
Sand Point and Brean Down are lovely walks as are the woods.
Foodwise, can't really recommend anywhere special except for Papa's fish and chips on the Boulevard.
Clevedon is nice,as are Wells and Cheddar.

WhenTheDragonsCame · 06/01/2022 21:40

There is a wildfowl and wetlands site in Somerset that looks nice.

DeepaBeesKit · 06/01/2022 21:44

I grew up near wsm. It's a place with a lot of poverty known for drug rehab houses.

I would go almost anywhere in Devon/Somerset except wsm.

For coast - croyde/saunton
For city - Bristol or bath

Bovey castle is indeed lovely but not cheap.

Nice bits of exmoor? Dunster?

teethingproblems · 06/01/2022 21:45

Thanks so much! Thinking of sticking to the place I've got booked and going to the Mexican on the first night, and then perhaps exploring other places (maybe Cardiff) what about Wookey Hole? Are there any theme parks nearby?

OP posts:
DeepaBeesKit · 06/01/2022 21:47

Spindelina ooooh Ludlow

I also like Lynton/Lynmouth etc

DeepaBeesKit · 06/01/2022 21:48

Wookey hole/cheddar are good.

Cardiff is a trek from wsm, bristol better option for a city.

changedforschoolpost · 06/01/2022 21:50

Nice little cafe on beach in nearby Uphill that you can walk to from from Weston along beach, great veggie cafe called Loves (or something similar) in Weston and nearby Kewstoke has a lovely quiet beach- a good walk there from Weston through old woodland and you can see an iron age fort. Good train links to Bristol, Bath etc and I like it as a fun place to poke about in the charity shops and strange little shops off the high street. A few good pubs and friendly with a view over the sea- recommend a walk to look at the old Birnbeck pier too.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 06/01/2022 21:54

Cardiff is miles away! Brean Down theme park is nearby but is as crap as Weston.

JazzyBBG · 06/01/2022 22:54

The cafe/restaurant on the end of the pier is lovely...

Lillyhatesjaz · 06/01/2022 22:59

Wooky hole is good especially if you have children there is a collection of antique fairground machines and indoor play equipment as well as the caves

OhGiveUp · 06/01/2022 23:23

I love Weston super mud, it holds a lot of lovely memories for me.
I usually visit at least twice a year for the weekend, which in fairness is usually spent getting very merry in the pub.
