Alternatives to Cornwall?

We are thinking it's going to be a UK holiday again this year as test, vaccines etc aren't going away and with kids who won't have had 2 (or more) jabs by then but will be old enough to 'need them' in Europe it all seems like too much trouble and risk of things going wrong.

So, we went to Cornwall last year (twice) and in 2020 and are wondering if there's somewhere else we should be considering? We are in the Midlands. Scotland looks good for outdoors options (hiking, mountain biking, kayaking) but is an awfully long drive away so would probably need to be two weeks and the weather looks less reliable (+midges!) in August.

Any ideas?

Pembrokeshire. Personally I also like North Wales (Llyn peninsula especially), but people tend to rave more about the Gower.

I love Devon- I prefer it to Cornwall- particularly south Devon.

I also enjoy the Suffolk coast and the new forest.

I also prefer Devon to Cornwall. Dorset is also worth considering.

Midges are usually west of Scotland so maybe somewhere south maybe Dumfries and schools are also back mid August so might be quieter. What about Devon or Dorset ?

I second Pembrokeshire, beaches are absolutely amazing

Splashinginpuddles15 · 06/01/2022 19:29

The Lake District is lovely . We normally go to Cornwall but went to the Lakes for a change . Great walks and water sports . We are going back as there is far too much to see and do in as week , which was the longest we could stay last summer .

I holiday in the UK a lot. My top places are Cornwall, Lake District/Peak District and Wales. Beautiful!

GreenClock · 06/01/2022 19:32

Pembrokeshire or Devon. I also like Southwold.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 06/01/2022 19:32

Norfolk is beautiful.

Sparkai · 06/01/2022 19:33

Northumberland? Same appeal as Scotland, but weather much drier on the East coast

fireplacetiles · 06/01/2022 19:33

Northumberland! As pretty as Cornwall with a 10th of the people! Lovely beaches, great food, friendly people and never crowded. Getting more popular every year however so go before everyone realises😊

whyarentiskinnyet · 06/01/2022 19:33

Sandbanks is amazing

RaininSummer · 06/01/2022 19:34

Somerset? Bridport, Lyme Regis?

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 06/01/2022 19:35

Wales. Pembrokeshire. Gower. Snowdonia. All gorgeous areas

firsttimemumhere · 06/01/2022 19:35

New forest. So much to see and do.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 06/01/2022 19:36

I'd go to Bamburgh.
We have been a few times-amazing hikes, beautiful sea and a stunning coastline. Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island/Lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle, Hadrians Wall to name but a few. fantastic exploring and a great part of the world.

We went to Scotland for a day trip

We were there early September and went in the sea but we are mad

HighlandCowbag · 06/01/2022 19:36

We went to Dawlish in South Devon last summer instead of a holiday abroad. We were a bit sceptical but absolutely loved it. I didn't fancy Cornwall and the crowds and the traffic. Our term ends a week earlier than many (16/16th July) and we paid £850 for an absolutely stunning caravan on Ladys Mile End holiday park. We rebooked before we left we loved it that much. Stunning coastline, everything was reasonably priced, fab caravan and campsite and loads to do even if we hadn't ended up going the week of the 2021 Heatwave.

North Yorksshire coast. Robin Hoods Bay.

devildeepbluesea · 06/01/2022 19:39

Just on a point of geography, Gower isn't in Pembs. It's in City & County of Swansea, with Carmarthenshire in-between the two. All of these places I'd recommend though!

North Gower is particularly lovely, and less busy than South Gower. Llangennith, Llanmadoc, Penclawdd...

Pembs - can't go far wrong around Newport, Poppit Sands etc.

Carmarthenshire - Laugharne, Llansteffan, Pendine

Also an honourable mention for Ceredigion: New Quay, Llamgrannog, Tresaith, Aberaeron

llansannan11 · 06/01/2022 19:39

Another vote for North Wales.

KirstenBlest · 06/01/2022 19:40

Shropshire, Northumberland, Wales.

Exhausteddog · 06/01/2022 19:40

We went to studland last year and it was absolutely beautiful around that area but it was probably the busiest I've ever seen a seaside area (barring Brighton and Padstow) we ate in most nights as all the restaurants were fully booked every night.

Justwingingit2005 · 06/01/2022 19:41

St Andrews, Scotland.
