Trauma, and how it can impact people? Particularly Complex or Developmental Trauma?

No, I'm lucky enough to not know or have any experience of it. Trust me when I say I know how lucky I am 💗

LubaLuca · 06/01/2022 19:19

No, absolutely not. I have no experience, either direct or indirect. I'm lucky, I know that.

DerAlteMann · 06/01/2022 19:27

No. I know nothing about them.

JennieTheZebra · 06/01/2022 19:33

Yes, I do. I experienced a very abusive childhood and have complex PTSD. I’m currently having EMDR. I’m also a student MH nurse with an academic interest in trauma and psychosomatic/unexplained illness. My psychologist has to be careful not to treat me like one her students! Why do you ask?

manseymoo1987 · 06/01/2022 19:46

Why do you ask?

RoarySaury · 06/01/2022 19:52

I asked out of curiosity mostly - I have Complex Trauma and I guess I was trying to gauge just how well known about it is within the general population.

I know how it has impacted me.

I have a vague idea how it has impacted other loved ones.

I would never claim to know a lot about it though because it’s such a personal thing

Bookridden · 06/01/2022 19:57

Is complex trauma the same as BPD? All I know about that is from what I've read on here, which is basically that it's a mental illness that is not treated sympathetically by a lot of clinicians (would be interested to know why).

SisterAgatha · 06/01/2022 19:57

All the time and how it changed me and who I might have been and why did I deserve it and was a test and god and the universe and the unfairness of it all.

manseymoo1987 · 06/01/2022 19:58

@RoarySaury

I am a psychologist and work with children/ young people with developmental trauma and attachment difficulties regularly. I would say that outside health/ education/ social care that people may have heard the terms, think they know about it but unless it has been experienced (and then the person has had therapeutic support to better understand what it all means) or as a professional had significant training then I don't think the general population would know a lot about it.

llansannan11 · 06/01/2022 19:59

Very little indeed.

RoarySaury · 06/01/2022 20:31

@manseymoo1987 Thanks, I guess that makes sense.

I guess when I look back, and when I speak to others with trauma-based diagnoses had people been more aware than perhaps I wouldn't be on year 8 of specialist therapy.

I feel like such a drain on the resources right.

@Bookridden some people say they are the same and some say they are different, but yes personality disorder labels do come with a lot of stigma.

My foster son has complex needs resulting from a very traumatic childhood.
