Happy Women's Christmas. Nollaig na mBan Shona Daoibh. On this day traditionally , the women get to party 🥳 after the hard work over Christmas. In the olden days this meant the men doing housework while the women had a rest. More proactive now with outings , meals , music and drink. Apologies if there is another thread.

Actually I know people who are doing their big family Christmas today because households were absent on 25 Dec due to COVID.

Plus my DF rescheduled his annual Christmas lunch with his cronies "The Sharpest Minds in Dublin" for today (be afraid, Dublin). The restaurant had to close in Christmas week due to staff absence.

It's good to have a do-over date available!

In which 'olden days' exactly did the men do the housework while the women partied?

Peridot1 · 06/01/2022 16:48

I’m from Dublin but don’t really remember hearing much about it growing up.

How does it square with Xmas decorations etc coming down today? Usually the woman is involved if not left to do it! Wink

Anyway Happy Women’s Christmas to all! ( bloody autocorrect tried to change Women’s to Wines. In week one of Dry January Sad)

Myself and four friends began celebrating this again four years ago. We tend to go out somewhere indulgent, but tomorrow we're at home with us all taking something along. WineWineWine

I don't know when, but Wikipedia reckons this occurs in Cork and Kerry - can't say I ever observed it in Dublin.

"The tradition, still strong in Cork and Kerry,[15] is so called because Irish men take on household duties for the day."

The friend who reinstated for our group is from Kerry.

Interesting, my ancestors came from Cork 200 years ago.

Pre-covid times this was a very popular night in my area (The midlands) for groups of women to get together and go for dinner in a restaurant.
Local restaurants even had Nollaig na mBan special menus!

I started doing this 20 years ago with all my sisters, nieces & my mother.

My mother & 2 nieces are now dead but happy memories.
