Incase anyone needs to hear it, some exercise is better than no exercise

I just thought I would let you all know a little tip that I’ve learnt. I have been very lazy since the first lockdown began, before that I always exercised minimally but when lockdown hit I stopped going to the gym, stopped commuting and was just working from home full time sat at my desk, the only exercise walking the dog. Before this I had been a gym member most of my adult life although I have never been a gym bunny, I would do a little cardio, a little weight training maybe the odd class. I would ramp it up every now and then before a holiday but on the whole I did only minimal exercise and I wouldn’t have called myself particularly fit.

So what I have discovered is that, that small amount of exercise I previously did must have been doing something because for the last year I have had neck pain, back pain and ankle pain that I have never had before. The other day I bent over slightly to lift something quite light and felt a twinge in my back that I never would have had before. The same day I placed my foot down slightly wonky and got a twinge in my ankle that made walking on it for the rest of the day painful. Honestly such minor movements that never would have affected me before! I am in my early forties and average weight, but I have realised exercise is not just about weight or looks. I have finally learnt my lesson and I’m going to start Pilates again and work myself back up. I feel like I have no muscles left in my body to support me and my whole body is going to pot. So learn from me, a little exercise is better than nothing! If anyone has been as stupid as me and managed to get fitter again, I’d love to hear about it.

Nameisjustaname have you tried Acupuncture or electrotherapy (not sure if I’ve got the name right there) DH had both from a guy who also does physio and swears the electro thing is the one thing that sorted his knee pain.

That is great to hear RazorstormUnicorn! Sounds like you are pretty much back to full fitness! I’m hoping it doesn’t take me too long to get back, I’ll just have to keep at it until I notice a difference.

Do a 15 minute walk at home with Leslie Sansone (You Tube). Easy and manageable to walk 1 mile in your front room. Plenty of ‘real’ people in her workouts!

@PurpleDaisies

Definitely!

The other thing that really helps me is remembering half hearted can’t really be bothered exercise is still better than sitting on the sofa. Also remembering that one bad day doesn’t mean you have to abandon everything and eat biscuits.

This! With bells on! I need a daily reminder I think!

It helps with mental health as well as physical, especially if you get outside and have the benefits of fresh air as well as exercise.

I love exercise but in short bursts. I do yoga: max half hour sessions but maybe 3/4 times a week. I spin ( bike at home) but only do half hour max classes. I again do small weights but short bursts a couple of times a week. I find that I can put more effort in for shorter bursts than for longer ones that I lose my concentration and attention span which to me is a better workout.

I should add that I walk a lot… I’m on my feet and clock up a few miles a shift. I also enjoying going for walks and do that too.

Exercise for me isn’t for losing weight it’s in conjunction with a healthier life style, getting my nutrition and fluids in, drinking alcohol to a minimum and good sleep. It’s a massive life saver for mood and mental health. Also as a 42 year old woman I feel i should be as healthy as I can be as I head towards menopause. Dont get me wrong I also eat some junk and have a few drinks a week but on the whole I try to look after myself.

Completely agree. I have started some exercise, Zumba mostly so not the most intense class but really fun. Been about 4 weeks and I can feel such a difference in energy levels and fitness level.

Pilates is a revelation. It won't make you lose weight but it will enable back to a fitness level that will enable you to exercise properly.

If you are stuck in a cycle of wanting to exercise but not feeling you can because of 'this nagging backache', 'this dodgy knee', or 'these creaky joints', then find a Pilates for Healthy Backs class in your area. They will not tie you to weird-looking machines nor make you put your big toe into your ear. But your deepest muscles will start to do the job they were designed for. And everyone is there for the same reason - to make their bodywork better.

Totally agree! Lovely thread.

I have often found that just getting a brisk walk can be like rinsing my head out and lifting my mood - and there is increasing research to show all kinds of positive benefits on the health and activity of the brain just from brisk walking alone.

Getting back to regular exercise was a mental health lifeline to me after I lost my second parent.

I also agree that it doesn't help to see it as a way to lose weight - it's far too easy to get disappointed and discouraged. That said, down the years I have found that when I am in the habit of regular exercise I am much more likely to eat good quality food in sensible portion sizes out of natural instinct, so I think it supports good weight management even though it's not a silver bullet. And now I'm menopausal...that's extra helpful!

Just finished a 20 min you tube strength workout. It wasn’t perfect but it’s better than nothing 😁

Bookridden · 06/01/2022 20:03

@Letitsnoooow do you mind sharing the details of the workout you do? 10 minutes sounds do-able. How intense is it?
