Apologies for daily Gail link but I'm have just read this absolutely open mouthed. Don't even know what to say!

Surgeon JAILED for saying women 'don't want to open legs any more'

I'm torn. What he said was horrific but I do believe people have the right to free speech (unless they incite violence etc). Who was it said (paraphrasing) "I may hate what you say but I will fight to defend your right to say it"?

I sure as hell wouldn't wait him as my doctor though!

SpookyScarySkeletons · 04/01/2022 21:46

Well actually @Binglebong he was convicted of inciting violence against women.

If you read the whole article I hope you will see why "free speech" doesn't really apply in this case.

What he said was appalling. He got a sentence he deserved.

I'm perplexed by your thread title. What had this to do with the wider male population?

This man spoke in a vile way about women. It doesn't lead me to distrust other men as a result (other things to do with make behaviour & societal structure might, but not the actions of this one misogynistic hateful man).

I think that for me it ties into the headlines over the last year or so. No this particular man hasn't done anything physically but to me it just speaks of this awful misogynistic attitude that I seem to be seeing more and more.

It really makes me upset that there are men out there that feel this way and, even worse, are prepared to voice it!

Well yes. But this is a pretty specific case and doesn't make me think anything more than this man is an arsehole who thankfully has had action taken against him

There is plenty of problematic male behaviour, for sure. But this specific case wouldn't suggest to me to extrapolate his behaviour to the wider male population.

ShirleyPhallus · 04/01/2022 22:10

I’ve read things on mumsnet tonight which show women’s internalised misogyny so I’m not surprised at all tbh

Binglebong · 04/01/2022 22:18

I did read the whole article. I'm surprised he was convicted of inciting violence as while what he said was vile in the quotes given he didn't.

He is s foul individual but while I hate what he is saying I'm not convinced that it was truly criminal.

And yes, I do think free speech should be fairly universal. That everyone should be able to say anything and that everyone should be able to ignore them. Otherwise what is to stop governments deciding that saying X is bad for policy? If you control words you control people.

Sittingonabench · 04/01/2022 23:02

I think freedom of speech is important however that should be tempered with the platform used. In this instance it appears he was giving a lecture (presumably on an unrelated topic?) which was being broadcast and had an audience (of students) in the position of an educator. That is not the platform to use to give your personal views and it takes advantage of a control dynamic of a lecture. Additionally some of the quotes I do believe were direct harassment to individuals in the audience due to their sex and I do believe it invites further violence against women due to the power dynamics of the platform. I would fight for his right to give his opinions (no matter how disgusting) in general conversation or on a platform where all participants are equal - or if a person with opposite views were also presenting or it was a debate. There is an importance to the methodology.

tectonicplates · 04/01/2022 23:12

"the surgeon claimed the accusations were part of a 'well-oiled international machine of communist signature and with Western state subversion as the ultimate goal'."

Okay, this guy is actually bonkers. It's bordering on conspiracy theory.

Binglebong · 04/01/2022 23:30

The harassment of the students would be a valid charge. And the power imbalance is an important point I hadn't considered.

I agree that he is completely bonkers as well as deeply unpleasant.

Binglebong · 04/01/2022 23:31

And he did abuse his position. It just didn't seem the right charge.

That is what I was trying to put across but you are far more eloquent than me!

I cant possibly imagine why women don't open their legs to him

Absolutely vile man. To think this man, as a plastic surgeon, will have had access to so many vulnerable women. Many of his comments where direct insults/harassment as opposed to generalised statements. I don't know every I stand on this, I agree with the right to free speech, but this isnt just free speech in a personal setting

Holothane · 05/01/2022 00:02

Dreadful man I bet he’s crap bed as well these sort of men usually are. He deserves everything he gets.

Grandville · 05/01/2022 13:05

Agree I'm a little perturbed by the criminal sentence. If those quotes are the worst of what he said, he doesn't seem to be actually calling for violence. I agree a charge of harassment would probably be appropriate and maybe something about abuse of authority although that might not stick as he was a guest speaker, not a lecturer.

Being fired from any jobs and voluntary positions would be entirely appropriate as he will bring disrepute to any org he might be involved with.

I'm very sadly not shocked at what he said. You hear this and much worse across the Internet. There has been a reported massive rise in traffic to incel sites which do directly call for the rape and murder of women. Guardian link: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/03/glorification-plymouth-shooter-incels-prompts-calls-for-action

There is a lot of truth in the saying that women don't really understand how much men (as a group) hate us. I am a lot more wary than I used to be.

IncompleteSenten · 05/01/2022 13:07

His mistake was saying what a lot of them think.

We should not fool ourselves. A scary amount of men feel this way.

Well maybe we can be heartened by the fact that this was so unusual it has made the news.

It's very shocking to read about his awful views and I did wonder if he was quite alright. I too am wondering about the punishment and concerns for free speech.

CorrBlimeyGG · 05/01/2022 13:26

He should move to the UK. That kind of talk would get him a seat on the Tory back benches.

GameofPhones · 05/01/2022 13:35

He sounds mentally ill.
