Eco Monthly Subscription - does this exist

Ecosaurus · 04/01/2022 20:08

I seem to be drawing up blanks on this. I'm in London (probably relevant as we seem to get way more things available to us).

I'm looking for a monthly environmentally-friendly subscription for things like washing detergent, household cleaning products, compostable bags, and beauty products.

I'd like it to be refillable products where available, but also I would like to be able to change the subscription each month if needed (i.e. if we have guests and need more of some products).

Anyone used anything similar?

I've not come across one, and suspect there may not be many around because they are designed to encourage consumption

You could try the subscribe options on Amazon?

Ecosaurus · 05/01/2022 08:37

@MoggyP - perhaps you are correct - though sadly without a monthly subscription I am far more likely to pick something up that's not so eco friendly, in new packaging, rather than an eco friendly refill option.

Haven't actually used Amazon for a while but perhaps I should see if my account is still functioning and look there.

SMOL offer a variety of cleaning products. We get their dishwasher tablets and they are very good.

We have Smol for dishwasher and washing machine tabs - zero plastic. I’m not aware of a service that does everything though! It might be worth seeing if it’s something you could set up specially with a local refill shop or similar?

BarbaraofSeville · 05/01/2022 08:47

Agree that a subscription is at odds with reducing consumption, although there is SMOL for cleaning products. There's also Who Gives a Crap for toilet paper.

Ecosaurus · 05/01/2022 08:51

Thanks - I'll take a look at Smol again.

Ideally I would like one subscription - that we can change - so it simplifies payment but most importantly delivery. There's the impact from multiple deliveries, but we both work shifts too although we do get one day a month where at least one of us will be here to receive it.

Splosh are good - but wouldn’t do everything you need

BigGreen · 05/01/2022 08:54

There's Homethings, OP. I have looked at their site but haven't ordered from them before.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 05/01/2022 08:59

You could do worse than ordering a monthly delivery of Ecover products from Ocado.

Their bottles are made of recycled plastic which closes the loop (actually the weakest link in recycling is finding uses for recycled materials).

Ocado have such good coverage the van will be driving about a very short distance from its next stop to your house, and you can select a time slot when they are already on your area. They deliver in bags which they take back and reuse next time. And you could get a full range of products in one delivery.

Also try odd box for fruit and veg.

Joxster · 05/01/2022 09:03

Our local refill service will let you book a slot when you run low, you leave your bottles out and they refill them for you. Otherwise they are at our local market once a month.

Worth checking if anyone like that round by you?

cloudtree · 05/01/2022 09:07

Op for cleaning look at ocean savers. They are tiny little capsules to which you add all the water at home in a reusable bottle. The capsule is about half the size of a dishwasher tablet. It’s not subscription but you could buy lots without taking up much space at all and therefore ensure you don’t run out.

cloudtree · 05/01/2022 09:08

Amazon sell ocean savers so you could set up subscribe and save

MotherOfCrocodiles · 05/01/2022 09:19

Basically I'm thinking it can't be a good trade off to have someone drive round to you house specially to pick up one or two empty bottles each month - unless you have loads (like a cafe or hotel) or all the neighbours do it and the company do one area per day (not a day of your choosing) the transport pollution probably outweighs the plastic issue- esp with those concentrated refills available.

Nikkynakkynoo · 05/01/2022 09:22

Milk and More might work for you - they do some refillable cleaning products plus various other eco household items, and you can set up regular orders.

Oh and Good Club frequently gets advertised at me but not used them so can't vouch for them

Splosh do subscriptions for their refills. I've used them for all my household cleaning products for a few years now.

I also use Who Gives a Crap for loo roll, kitchen roll and tissues.

Ecosaurus · 05/01/2022 10:24

Thanks all, I'll take a look. Quite a few suggestions I haven't heard of.

Bide does a subscription box www.bideboxes.com/collections/bide-boxes

CheeseMaiden · 05/01/2022 11:55

Abel and Cole do cleaning and some household supplies, they might be the better option to Amazon

Fifthtimelucky · 05/01/2022 12:50

I second Homethings, though I'm still on my first order so haven't reordered yet.

I had a starter pack including washing powder, dishwasher tablets, floor cleaner and three tablets that you add water to and turn into cleaning sprays (one general purpose, one for mirrors and glass and one for bathrooms).

Very impressed with results so far.

LER83 · 05/01/2022 13:01

I use a combination of splosh and smol for most home cleaning. Splosh do shampoo and body wash etc. Other stuff I'm not too sure, we just go to the local refill shop or get eco versions in the normal tesco shop. Milk&more have started a refill system for laundry stuff i think.

Naughtypenguin · 05/01/2022 20:52

We use smol and who gives a crap for loo rolls . The smol capsules come in packaging that fits through the letterbox so you only need to be in for the first delivery which contains the reusable bottles. With the toilet rolls I started off buying a single box of 48 and I'm seeing how long they lasts before setting up a subscription. Very pleased with the quality of both
