If you’re not elderly but need a glasses chain what do you wear?

I’m ‘only’ 46 but wear varifocal glasses (even saying that makes me feel ancient!).

Have started a new care assistant job and need to have my glasses on to see the logging device (like a mobile phone you record anything you’ve done with residents) but don’t need them on the rest of the time.

I’ve tried putting them in my pockets but not ideal. I tend to put them on my head but they keep falling off whenever I bend down.

So I’ve come to the sad conclusion that I need a granny glasses chain.
But don’t want it to look tooooo granny esque.

What solutions have other MNers come up with?

My mum has a brooch that she can hook her glasses through (although she stopped using it when she got varifocals because she doesn't need to take those off). She also bought some reasonably attractive chains in Specsavers, quite fine and decorative.

I wear a glasses cord. It does not make me look any older, it is just a functional item. It is a nice colour.

I’ve been wondering about this. I’m switching sectors and don’t want to look older than necessary as the newbie.

I’ve no answer yet, but remember when fluorescent ones on raybans were a thing circa 1990?

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 04/01/2022 19:17

The ones that push onto the ends of you glasses rather than hang down the side of your face
"Sports lanyard" sort of thing.
Or , dependent on dimensions you can push the glasses onto the front of your neck where they can grip surprisingly well.

LivingInaBuildingSite · 04/01/2022 19:52

Thanks all, just tested the neck thing but they’re too loose.

@CamsPaisleyCuffs they look nicer than what I was imagining so I might get one and try.

Already feel like an old newbie compared to most of the others there and had to get my glasses out to read the LFT code this morning and one of the young guys teased me a little (nothing mean just made me realise I’m significantly older than most of them).

I think glasses cords are so cool I wish I needed one!

You can get really cool bright chunky chain ones now.

Thankgodforgin · 04/01/2022 20:08

ASOwww.asos.com/search/?page=1&q=sunglasses%20chainS have quite a few, but you have to search for sunglasses chains

Eminybob · 04/01/2022 20:12

Sarah Jessica Parker was recently papped wearing this chain for her face mask, but it can be used for glasses too. Think they are now sold out on Amazon but if it’s what your after I imagine there are similar ones available.

If you’re not elderly but need a glasses chain what do you wear?
RampantIvy · 04/01/2022 20:14

Erm. If you are wearing varifocals why would you need to take them off? Shouldn't they accommodate all of your vision requirements?

rrhuth · 04/01/2022 20:16

one of the young guys teased me a little (nothing mean just made me realise I’m significantly older than most of them)

a) he needs telling to fuck off (revise the language for workplace I suppose, but I would give him a full on Hmm for that sort of rudeness)
b) why do you care what a dickhead thinks?

Being older is nothing to be embarrassed about.

LoannaJumley · 04/01/2022 20:17

😂 Varifocals are meant to be worn all the time, there's no need to take them off.

LivingInaBuildingSite · 04/01/2022 20:22

In theory they should I agree, but I just don’t need them for care work activities and they’re new to me so give me a headache walking around, turning my head quickly, etc.

I skimped and paid slightly less to get less ‘vari’ in the focal or something, wish I hadn’t now as the side of the lenses are useless.

I think they’re generally too loose as I’m always pushing them up my nose too so should take them back for tightening, if that’s a thing. Didn’t have glasses at all until between lockdowns, then switched to varifocals after the second lockdown as my eyes got worse so quickly.

Opticians are bloody expensive too so I don’t want to go back and be told I need more new ones again,

You'll find they swing in front of you and get in the way with a cord or chain, the brooch idea is a good one, or hooking them over the front of your top.
A sporty/surfy short neoprene strap might work.

Bamaluz · 04/01/2022 20:27

Just an example of what I mean - sunglasses strap

LivingInaBuildingSite · 04/01/2022 20:28

Hadn’t thought of that (swinging in front of me).
Think I may have a running type short one that I could try if I can find it, I didn’t get on with it running (for sunglasses not reading glasses).

Maybe a combo of the chain and hooking them on my top, then if they fall I know they won’t end up in a loo! But they’re not swinging all the time.

Ugh I'm in this position too. I can't see to sew or read from my phone with my glasses or contacts but am too short sighted to manage without. I remind myself of my parents.

1Wanda1 · 04/01/2022 20:31

Talis Chains have some very cool options

XingMing · 04/01/2022 20:32

I had a few that were like pendants with a single ring to slot one arm through, but now have varifocals I don't need them anymore.

1Wanda1 · 04/01/2022 20:32

Or Missoma have nice ones. Sali Hughes wears a Missoma one

WithRosesAroundTheDoor · 04/01/2022 20:33

What about a clip instead?

There are also these magnets too. I bought some for my husband as he has the same issue: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184454113179?hash=item2af252679b:g:I~AAAOSwK9lfZa7e&var=692156553752
