The 5th or the 6th and do I take them down before or after

Yes I know it's superstitious and I can take them down when I want to but for reasons I won't go in to I'm feeling superstitious 😂

Google seems as confused as me.

Twelfth night for me. The 5th.

tiredofthisshit21 · 04/01/2022 16:15

When you're sick of looking at it? Which for me was on Sunday Grin

In some parts of Ireland the tree doesnt come down before Epiphany aka little Christmas or Women's Christmas on the 6th. And I read today you keep the Holly up until Shrove Tuesday and then use it to cook the pancakes.

MsTSwift · 04/01/2022 16:18

God who would want tatty Christmas decorations and a dead tree hanging round until 1st Feb! Just doing mine now - exhausting

Ladyglittersparkleseriously · 04/01/2022 16:18

That would be an ecumenical matter

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 04/01/2022 16:21

Count 25th Dec as your 1st day and then up to and including the 5th Jan.

Ta-daaa! The Twelfth Night

5th January

1forAll74 · 04/01/2022 16:23

I didn't have a tree, but removed all the Christmas cards today, as my cats keep knocking them over. Also removed some Christmas lights from around my fireplace at the same time.. Never been bothered about the 12th night thing..

wishingitwasspring · 04/01/2022 16:24

So if we agree on the 5th for twelfth night, are they coming down before or after 🤪

Was it not bad luck to leave them up after so take them down on the day?

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 04/01/2022 16:30

before dusk i thought

CMhater · 04/01/2022 16:31

Anytime before midnight on the 5th January.

2319inprogress · 04/01/2022 16:34

Was anyone else brought up being told that 3 witches will fly through the houses on twelve night (5th) & give a year of bad luck to any house with a decoration left out?Confused

nope just my crazy mother then

Swirlywoo · 04/01/2022 16:36

I was raised catholic and it is 6th for tree deadline for me.

If it helps I left them up til 8th last year and nothing bad happened. Well, unless you count badly spraining my ankle which until this moment I had not linked with my christmas tree taking down.

ancientgran · 04/01/2022 16:36

I take it down when I've had enough of it which was yesterday.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 04/01/2022 16:41

Superstition isn't real

. Take it down whenever you want. Literally nothing that has ever happened to anyone or will ever happen to anyone was/will be determned by when they de-tinsel their tree

Unless of course you injure yourself while doing it Grin

Seriously, this is not a thing, why are you stressing?

Swirlywoo · 04/01/2022 16:42

Doesn't the Queen keep hers up til February?

Peridot1 · 04/01/2022 16:43

6th for me.

Although I took one down yesterday. Main one up until 6th. And I’ll keep some lights up to cheer the place up.

AmyDudley · 04/01/2022 16:45

Just to add to the confusion, one tradition apparently says that if you don't get them down by 12th night, you have to wait until Candlemas (2nd feb ?)
Other superstitions suggest it is bad luck to take then down before 12th night.
It seems that Protestants and Catholics have differing dates for 12th night which may be why I always thought it was 6th (come from a terribly lapsed family Grin).
Anyhoo - I vote for going with the flow and ignoring superstition, once you start down the slippery slope of acting on superstition you are only moments away from lucky pants and flinging salt over your shoulder.

CurryLover55 · 04/01/2022 16:45

If you start counting on Christmas Day, then Jan 6th is 13 days. So 12th night is today.

RedToothBrush · 04/01/2022 16:48

Ibstart on the 4th usually these days and leave up my favs until the 5th.

Ive got most down and boxed up now. Tomorrow is wrapping up and putting them away.

BeyondMyWits · 04/01/2022 16:50

If you don't know when twelfth night is just take it all down when you want to.

How can you be superstitious about following someone else's superstitions?

Concestor · 04/01/2022 16:52

Everything down by midnight on the 5th. I do it in stages from the 2nd onwards
