I HAVE TO VENT.

Dirty David has put cranberry sauce on a scone, which might be questionable were it not leftovers time which makes such behaviour allowable (and he claims he had no jam despite not exactly being on the breadline) BUT he put it ON TOP of the cream! I can't believe this, or that anyone would think that's right (I'm sure Devon only does it to annoy their neighbours because they lost the pasty war)

But not only that, it appears that he didn't even use butter 😱 DISGUSTING.

I shall never watch him again. How can anybody mistreat a cream tea in such a cavalier manner? He probably puts the milk in his tea first too.

Butter AND cream? Surely not...?

Sn0tnose · 04/01/2022 12:06

Why would you put butter on a scone if you’re putting cream on it? That’s just weird.

Let’s be honest, cranberry is a red fruity jam like substance. What’s the difference?

And while I’m at it, putting the milk in first is far more sensible than putting it in afterwards.

Damnloginpopup · 04/01/2022 12:14

Well yeah, you have to put butter on as there's never enough cream and you have to protect the surface from absorbing all the juicy goodness surely?

Why did I discover this AFTER beginning my diet today? I so need to make a batch of big, fluffy, hot scones (with buttermilk) to check my indignation is not misplaced now Grin

I can't even go down the National Trust for one as they've been known to put the cream.on first (and officially apologised) although they give you little pots of not enough if either. And butter (so there !)

You absolutely need butter (which was not forthcoming at a National Trust property last weekend Hmm) but I’m sorry, the jam goes on top of the cream.

Additionally, it’s scone to rhyme with gone. Not scone to rhyme with cone.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/01/2022 12:19

Cream then jam.

Cranberry sauce sounds nice though. Mmmm on a cheese scone with a lump of cheese.

IntermittentParps · 04/01/2022 12:25

He's wrong, but you are also wrong using butter.
It's
scone
jam
cream

End.

IntermittentParps · 04/01/2022 12:26

Oh yes, and it’s scone to rhyme with gone. (Derbyshire if anyone's doing an ethnographic survey).

Damnloginpopup · 04/01/2022 12:32

Yep, definitely gone. Which the whole tray would be if I did make some...

Butter and cream? Monsters.

Metheven · 04/01/2022 12:33

There is only one way to correctly load a scone.

Cut scone in half. Spread jam liberally on both halves. Dollop Rodda's clotted cream on each half. Squish down with the spoon. Put another dollop of Rodda's on. Lick spoon. Shovel each half into gob. Repeat.

Always #jamfirst. Never, ever, ever butter if using cream. Never.

I say scone to rhyme with gone
I definitely think you need butter,
Scone - butter - jam - cream.
I'd not be happy with the national trust (or anyone else) serving me a cream tea which they had already constructed especially if they had done it the wrong way All elements should be served separately for people to assemble as they wish.

RonniePickering · 04/01/2022 12:48

Eww to the butter on, but I'd probably try a cranberry one tbh 🤔
Always jam first, then the cream. It rhymes with gone 👩‍⚖️

diddl · 04/01/2022 12:50

"but I’m sorry, the jam goes on top of the cream."

Well you absolutely should be sorry because it definitely does not!Grin

The cream goes on top so that you can just keep adding more!

Damnloginpopup · 04/01/2022 12:55

Now the alliance / rebellion is growing I can make another point about cream on top - it doesn't get squashed!

Metheven you were spot on apart from the butter resistance.

To be fair to the NT I think it was for an advert rather than for a real life middle class tea room scenario. But still. You expect more really. Like the butter Flangeosaurus was denied.

crazycrochetlady · 04/01/2022 12:58

David has a holiday home down the road from me (in Cornwall) and should definitely be doing JAM FIRST rather than the (wrong) Devon way. And if you're using cream you NEVER use butter. Standards and rules MATTER

crazycrochetlady · 04/01/2022 12:59

AND he's married to a Cornishwoman so ought to know

Poshjock · 04/01/2022 13:00

Grounds for divorce right?

Baddiel is Dirty!
SeasonFinale · 04/01/2022 13:01

Jam first No butter.

Cranberry sauce is very resourceful if none in and can't be arsed to go out!

Thank you. Butter is fantastic on a scone, with or without jam. But not with cream.

As a Cornishwoman, this is a hill I am prepared to die on.

ancientgran · 04/01/2022 13:05

As long as there's plenty of jam and cream it really doesn't matter.

Poshjock · 04/01/2022 13:05

Further evidence of complete incompatibility.

Baddiel is Dirty!
WaningMoon · 04/01/2022 13:05

It’s butter, then cream, then jam.

Mind you I am from the North.

Damnloginpopup · 04/01/2022 13:07

Don't die, sit on a cliff watching basking sharks and surfers!

At least we all agree on clotted cream (I hope!) Otherwise I'll regret not name changing 😁 Imagine using squirty cream - it would absolutely have to go on top of you were crass enough to use it (Queens Regulations state it is only allowed one year into a nuclear winter. Or should.)

And Mrs Baddiel gets my first LTB.

I'm intrigued that there have (so far) been no disagreements over the pronunciation
