I see lots of unfamiliar bottles in the supermarket. DD introduced me to a delicious balsamic glaze from Sainsbury I wouldn't have thought if trying. Going to a large branch tmw, so thought I'd ask for other advice and ideas to get out of a rut. Many thanks.

I like the Spice Tailor range of cooking sauces, handy when you’re in a hurry.

I also like Luchito Chipotle paste for marinating chicken for stir fries / fajitas.

What is the balsamic glaze called, or is it Sainsbury’s own brand?

Only available online but frozen curry sauces from Spiced by Rayeesa are amazing. Though not cheap.

What sort of food do you like? There are kids of meal kits now - blue dragon, Spice Tailor, Miso etc. I'd start with them figure out what you like and then go down the individual ingredient route.

Thank you all. I've added Spice Tailor to my list, and the Chipotle paste and miso. The glaze @errnerrcallnernnernnern is Sainsbury's own brand. Even when I knew what I was looking for, I couldn't find it - had to ask a passing teenage assistant. @itwasntaparty we have slightly different tastes - DH likes (really, actually enjoys) tripe, and squid heads - neither of which I can swallow. He has to cook and eat tripe by himself; squid heads on holiday. I think our favourite cuisine was Singaporean. But I am always uncomfortable with new foods, worrying about effect of eg economies that come to rely on almond growing, or avocados, or the air miles in coconut products. And when I read foodie columns mentioning sriracha and 'nduja, I have no idea what they are for; I was stumped by a jar of rose harissa... (So different from when I learned to bake from the Be-Ro book; but we try not to eat all the nice fattening things I am good at!) @PermanentTemporary: I will investigate the frozen curry sauces; I was working my way through ordinary ones, and some are quite uninspiring.

At the risk of sounding basic, no kitchen cupboard should be without original HP Sauce and Colman's English Mustard. Accept no substitutes. Henderson's Relish and/or Worcestershire Sauce and Branston Pickle are also essentials but best kept in the fridge.

@WildRosie yes, I agree. And have them.

Soy sauce, both dark and light, sesame oil and sweet chili sauce. I use them so often for pasta sauces, noodles, stir frys, chicken etc.
