Toddler duvet

Hi
My 2.5 year old is going in to a single bed…I am going to get a single sized duvet but should I get 4/4.5 tog as per advice for toddler beds or should I get 7/7.5 tog for winter? Everywhere I have looked seems to say 4 tog for toddlers but I’m sure he’ll be cold?

If its a single bed rather than a toddler bed then you can go heavier than 4.5tog
7/7.5tog is likely to be fine but I'm not sure I'd go heavier than that

I got a normal duvet for my toddler.

She mostly sleeps on top of it under another cover.

I would get what’s advised. I would be terrified they’d overheat.

My ds and dd both still have their 4.5tog duvets on and they are teenagers. You could provide an extra blanket or they could wear warmer pyjamas if they feel cold

TheCraicDealer · 03/01/2022 20:46

For a child that young I'd stick with the 4tog. If they're cold on a really chilly night they'll wake up, you go in and stick a cellular blanket on over the top of the duvet. I'd rather that than they overheat.

Thanks everyone. Would definitely rather he be cold than overheat but wasn’t sure if because it was a single bed rather than cot bed the rules were different as more space for them to move from under it.
Will get a 4.5 tog as can’t seem to find 4 tog.
Thanks again!

Whilst I’m here….has anyone used sleeping bags while getting their toddler used to the bed from cot? I obviously can’t do it the normal way around & give him a duvet in his cot as the duvet will be single sized so too big but moving him to a new bed AND getting used to a duvet seems a lot!
(New room as well the poor thing!)

I had a toddler quilt thing for in the cot rather than a duvet just before they went into a bed

RedWingBoots · 03/01/2022 21:34

OP can your toddler get himself up to use the potty/toilet? Or can he wake up and come into yours/a siblings room?

If so you don't want to use a sleeping bag.

Lou0712 · 03/01/2022 21:45

Yes maybe getting a toddler one for cot bed first is a good idea.

He’s not potty trained yet and is an amazing sleeper, only waking in the night when poorly but doesn’t try to stand up in the cot or anything. The single bed has low sides the whole way down on one side so we thought we’d face that side outwards at first with the trundle bed pulled out below just in case he did manage to get out.
I don’t think he’d try though….the only reason we are moving him is because we need his cot bed for our 5 month old! Annoying as he would definitely last a lot longer in his cot bed…

Could you keep the 5mo in a travel cot for a while whilst DS gets used to new room-duvet-bed? My worry would be him getting out of the bed and trying to walk in the sleeping bag and tripping, especially in the dark, and too much change in one go. But sometimes they surprise you with how they roll with all these changes we think are a massively big deal!

Lou0712 · 04/01/2022 07:22

@TheCraicDealer yes we did think about this. And really there is no desperate rush to move DD so we can do it over the next couple of months but it’s still 3 big changes at once unless we do duvet in his cot now for a bit or try move his cot bed into new room for a while. Think we might need to do one of these options really.
Feel sorry for my little man! But hoping like you said he surprises us and adapts easily!
