Do you have a IKEA kitchen?

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 03/01/2022 17:35

If so.... are you happy with it?
The cost
The quality
The fitting

Got an appointment booked in a couple of weeks with them.
Was going to go with wren but my friend had a bloody nightmare!
Just looking for advice and tips really. Thanks

Really love ours. Great quality.

Hugoslavia · 03/01/2022 18:08

We've had many an IKEA kitchen, although fitted ourselves. We have always been extremely happy with the quality. Porsche used to make their glass door soft close mechanisms, not sure if they still do. We just had a new kitchen fitted professionally by a German company. Not cheap. We then used IKEA black units to replicate it in the utility area. The expensive black units are already chipped, the IKEA ones aren't, although the hinges on the washing machine door aren't great (it's MDF inside and hard to repair). You also get what you pay for with IKEA. We bought their most expensive oak kitchen years ago and it was very well made. I can't fault IKEA really.

helpfulperson · 03/01/2022 18:08

I love mine. I liked that it was a fixed price fitting within certain parameters eg electrics moved less than 2m. The fitters then came and quoted for all the additional work including painting etc. And gave me a good quote for some other work that they did at the same time in the rest of the house.

Had many ikea kitchens... they are very good for the price

Although I got builders to fit them and used another co to put in swishy work tops 😀 still going strong 10 years later

I designed it myself on the app thing and went in store to order

Hugoslavia · 03/01/2022 18:13

Also, we only used their units, but bought sink, handles and worktops from elsewhere. If you Google IKEA hacks there are hundreds of Pinterest sites where people use IKEA basics and upgrade other elements to make stunning bespoke products.

weemouse · 03/01/2022 18:13

I was pleased with mine for about the first 5 years, but I wouldn't buy one again.

Now knocking on 10 years and my white cupboards/facings are all turning yellow/off-white.

It's less robust and less quality from a previous kitchen. The exterior coatings are wafer thin and easily chipped.

They are a good budget buy, but do not stand up to better branded kitchens.

Lacedwithgrace · 03/01/2022 18:14

In our rental property yes, but we have different worktops. The fitting was no more expensive than getting someone else in and organising it was fine. Good customer service when we had a slight issue. They've held up really well about 7/8 years and no issues yet.

RedWingBoots · 03/01/2022 18:17

I have a nearly 11 year old Ikea kitchen so is one of the old ones. It consists of Ikea units and worktops.

I choose my own appliances which came from AO. Also I choose my own sink and tap. Can't remember where I brought them from.

I got a designer to design it for me.

The builder got the kitchen fitter and plasterer, as the builders were a plumber and electrician.

The builder picked up virtually all the units and worktops for me though I had to drive to another store to get 2 doors. Luckily I live in London and have a car so it wasn't a massive chore.

I've actually had Ikea kitchens in rental properties which is why I eventually settled on one. I've had different plumbers come to service my boiler and after about year 5 they have been surprised by the quality of Ikea units.

I know other people with Ikea units and the consensus is if possible source your own worktops, appliances, sink and tap. This stops it looking Identikit and you get the stuff you want. Then sort out your own fitter.

saleorbouy · 03/01/2022 18:18

Have had one 3 years now. I fitted it myself and it was very straightforward and easy. It was the first time I've fitted an IKEA kitchen others have been Howdens or Wickes.
The only thing you need to know for planning is where your existing services, drainage, water and electrical runs are as the service space behind the cabinet carcasses are much smaller than other manufacturers and you might need to re-jig these.
We pick it up ourselves but imagine that if IKEA are collecting and fitting it then it would be fairly seamless.
I'm happy with the quality and spares and doors etc are easily available if you do damage anything (from experience this is difficult with other company units). The units themselves are rigorously tested by IKEA so the components are well able for hard daily use.
Appliances carry a 5yr guarantee so are better covered then most other manufacturers.

Those of you who have one did you just go into the shop with measurements? Did they draw plans up?

We moved in September and we have a tiny kitchen so I think ikea would be good for storage space after reading these comments!

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 03/01/2022 18:20

If you know a good kitchen fitter, I would go use DIY Kitchens.

We paid for someone to come round to measure up & plan it. We tried the online planning tool but we wanted some slightly different things which were much easier to plan with an actual person

We used the online planner first and then they checked it over for us in store. I knew what I wanted and what would go where though. I'd visit Ikea first though to just look at the kitchens to get a feel for what they do and what you'd like.
shouldhavebeen · 03/01/2022 18:48

Got ours in 2010, installed it ourselves, moved house twice and taken the kitchen with us each time ( It's the normal thing to do in Italy!) Still looks great and nothing is broken. I love it!

TheStickMan · 03/01/2022 18:50

Thanks @SwedishEdith and @ChimChimeny - will have a go at the online planner tomorrow and have a play around with it before I go into store!

DinosApple · 03/01/2022 19:07

Cost and quality very happy. Ours was 7 years old when we left and it still looked new.

Fitting - DH and his builder friend did it. It was tricky as no service gaps so they had to cut that out, but obviously their fitters would know what they are doing.

Caspianberg · 03/01/2022 19:08

We have one in our holiday rental. It’s great. I built it myself, it literally goes together like all ikea furniture, just follow the instructions. Just had plumber finalise the sink plumbing.

Ours is just one length (4.5m) with no corners though so pretty easy. Was pretty cheap even though we bought the more ‘premium’ options. No cost fitting.

I will use again in our utility room.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 03/01/2022 19:33

So I plan to go around IKEA for a look at the displays on Saturday. That gives me 2 weeks before my planning appointment to decide on things

I did in my old flat ... bloody loved it and was sad when I moved out...

New house is lush (but do miss my ikea kitchen)

Chattercino · 03/01/2022 19:38

We've just finished our utility room and used IKEA units. I'm really pleased with them, but the only thing I would say is that, on a few occasions

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 03/01/2022 19:39

@Chattercino I'm in suspense now!

TooMuchSugar22 · 03/01/2022 19:40

I had no problem with wren!
Delivered on time. There was one unit damaged. Called up and a new one was delivered the next day like 7am!
Wasn't their fitters though.

Chattercino · 03/01/2022 19:41

Sorry, pressed too soon

On a few occasions we had to change bits and bobs and that wasn't as simple as popping to the local Howdens (think delivery- waiting time, plus cost). Plus things like hinges are all bespoke to IKEA - so again when I accidentally didn't order enough of those that was another fairly lengthy delay. It was definitely cheap, but wasn't as convenient as Howdens would have been.

comfortablyfrumpy · 03/01/2022 19:41

I have had 2 before, and would use again. That was self-fitting.

The only problem really was delivery. Second kne turned up in batches, which was annoying.

Chattercino · 03/01/2022 19:44

This is a picture - obviously only a small space
