Does anything stop fish making the house smell for days after cooking?

I want to eat more of it but can't bear the way it hangs around the house for so long. I've tried a chefs candle, vinegar, window opening etc. mostly I oven bake fish. Help!

@alisonsattic

Fish shouldn't really smell if it's fresh. Cook it on the day you buy it. Extractor fan on
Hahaha Of course fish smells. It smells like fish. Go down the harbour when they are bringing in the catch of fish that is as fresh as fish can be and it smells of fish.

This is weird. I've never noticed a smell after cooking fish. The smell of smoked mackerel hangs around but not until the next day.

The cooking smell I can't stand is cheap meat frying, like burgers and fatty chops. Unfortunately DH's favourite!

Check your extractor fan. Since we got a new one, there are no lingering food smells.

Fag smoke and dog farts will cover fish smell any day.

Tubbyinthehottub · 02/01/2022 21:45

It absolutely stinks. Just don't eat it, or only eat it in restaurants.

I burn lemongrass, it takes the smell away.’

Sounds lovely - do you burn actual sticks of lemongrass that you buy say from the fruit & veg aisle ? Or a lemongrass oil etc?

100problems · 02/01/2022 22:19

@Cheerfulcharlie well yes, I suppose if one is knocking up a whole trawler load it would defeat a few diffuser reeds. But a couple of salmon cooked in foil doesn't have the same je ne sais quoi Grin

I also hate it.
Try one of the cooks candles to neutralise the smell when cooking.
Afterwards do a really good clean down and remove all decries to an outside bin.
If you have a waste disposal put lemon down
If you have a dishwasher make sure you rinse plates first.
Air the house as much as possible but keep kitchen door to the rest of the house tight shut when cooking.
It's a horrible smell

One way is to cook from frozen.

I make a garlicky tomato sauce, put it over a low heat so it is barely simmering, then stir in slices of chorizo or some black olives. Lay squares of frozen hake on top of the sauce, put a lid on the pan and leave for four minutes. Serve over rice/couscous etc. No smell at all.Smile

GoldilocksZone · 03/01/2022 07:01

Ooh that sounds great @MintJulia - will try it.

Can you light a handful of matches in the kitchen area afterwards? That's what we do to deal with cat poop smell from the litter tray in the utility room - works really well!! I think it must be the same principle as the burnt toast suggestion upthread.

MuesliNameChange · 03/01/2022 07:11

Sorry I mean that's what we do in the utility room, after we've scooped/changed the litter tray, to get rid of the lingering odour.

KiloWhat · 03/01/2022 07:11

@ThreeLeggedCat

Burn some toast just after cooking the fish. The carbon absorbs the smell - just like carbon filters in commercial kitchens but on a much much smaller scale.
Oooh genius
AuntyMabelandPippin · 03/01/2022 15:08

@Cheerfulcharlie sorry, I've just seen this!

I use lemongrass oil, in a burner. You could just boil lemon juice in a pan I think, lemon is good at taking smells away.

burblish · 03/01/2022 20:08

Burning incense sticks really works!
