Really basic question- how does kindle work and which is the best one to buy?

Just that really- Im determined to get back into reading this year and wonder if kindle is the way to go.

Is there a most recommended one and are current books cheaper to buy on kindle than in paper format?

Unfortunately you can't use a kindle for it.

Can anyone tell me if you can read your amazon books on a kobe?
I have lots of TBR on my broken kindle.

Only kindle will read amazon books because Amazon encrypts them to tie you in. Perhaps download the kindle app to your phone / tablet just to get through your tbr pile if you don't want to buy another kindle?

Kobo is open source and you can use Borrowbox on them I believe, although it is a bit more complicated than with overdrive. I'd check that though, I haven't done it myself.
