Broken wrist, cast and school clothes

PiIsAReallyLongNumber · 02/01/2022 13:52

My ds (10) broke his wrist on new years eve and is in a cast.
We're realising that non of his clothes fit over the cast and he's due back at school Wednesday. An added complication is that all of the windows in his class will be open due to covid.
What on earth do people wear with a cast in the winter?

Pe kit?

RJnomore1 · 02/01/2022 13:58

You might need to get a cheap hoodie and cut the sleeve open a bit

Thiswayorthatway · 02/01/2022 13:59

Had this with DS2. Size bigger, dress the bad arm first as the good arm can bend. Stretchy jumper in same colour, or a gilet/body warmer? School should be understanding for 6 weeks.

HalfHolly · 02/01/2022 14:01

Are sure none of his clothes fit? It's just that we thought the same when ds had a wrist to mid arm cast recently and phoned the school - they just said get as close to uniform as you can. When we tried the shirt on him it did fit but the wrist buttons needed to be open. He needed help with his tie and was able to wear his school jumper. Coats were more of a problem. Also we used a plastic covering for the shower called Limbo which kept the cast dry - they are on Amazon and were recommended by the hospital.

Jumper but with his arm inside the jumper (jumper over the sling type thing)

Didiplanthis · 02/01/2022 14:02

My DS could get short sleeved shirts/polos on then wore a tank top we could slide on and a s hill coloured zip up fleece over the top. What is their uniform ?

Didiplanthis · 02/01/2022 14:03

We also got bigger sizes.

RoseAndRose · 02/01/2022 14:03

Are the teachers in the day before? Always best to warn then first in a 'this is one way I can solve it right now, and let me know if it's a problem' sort of way - chances are they'll say yes.

Because when my DS was in a case, he was allowed to wear anything that was more or less the right colour (got a big cheap navy sweatshirt from a supermarket and cut the cuff off). Look for things like thermal tshirt to go underneath and try supermarket or charity shop for collared shirt you can cut one sleeve to fit over it.

Or ask if there's any unclaimed Stuff in lost property he could have - either bigger size for the duration, or one which can be sacrificed by slicing a sleeve.

PiIsAReallyLongNumber · 02/01/2022 14:21

Right ok. Thanks everyone. I'll look for a larger hoody and gilet for him.
I think his polo tops will stretch over the cast so I'll also get some vest type things.

@HalfHolly did you measure the arm/cast for the limbo cover?
Ds is pretty happy that he hasn't had to shower for 2 days but this is not sustainable

Is he in a temporary cast or the full cast he'll have for the whole time? When DD broke hers earlier this year the backslab they put on for the first few days was massive and hardly anything went over it. But when it was changed to the lighter cast it was a lot easier.

BeanAnTae · 02/01/2022 15:14

Pils I've name changed to get rid of the Christmas name but I'm Half.

Yes, I measured his non fractured arm with a tape measure. He's very slim for 12 so I chose the slim fit. It worked like a charm - fit was perfect, despatched quickly and it kept the cast dry. The hospital discharged him with a leaflet for limbo products.

It's arm circumference above the elbow that they are looking for because that's were the seal is. Hope your ds gets better soon. Don't forget the notes keeping him off PE 😁. Our lad had to be careful that he didn't fall so no bike, skateboard etc and the number of times I had to tell him to take his good hand out of his pocket in case he fell again 🙄

bizboz · 02/01/2022 15:19

DD had a full arm cast in year 6. I bought the biggest size polo shirts which fit over the cast and she wore her cardigan with one sleeve only. Harder with a sweatshirt though and it was summer term so not as cold. I second the idea of a largeish hoodie in the uniform colour.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 02/01/2022 15:20

Schools tend to not like hoodies, can you get him a normal round neck jumper he can wear a shirt under, Fruit of the loom do some cheap ones and you should be able to get them in vlack/ navy whatever his school colours are. If the sleeves don't fit you could cut the cuff of the sleeve off then roll the sleeve over the cast.
Get a thermal t-shirt for him to wear under the shirt too, although I'd get that regardless of broken arm, the classrooms are going to be cold.

Email his head of year to give them a heads up they'll prob be checking their emails tomorrow / Tuesday, they may give him a 'uniform pass'.

bizboz · 02/01/2022 15:21

Also, bath not shower!

itsgettingweird · 02/01/2022 15:24

T shirts and fleeces will be fine.

Please don't ask the schools permission to agree what he can wear or spend a fortune on new clothes for 4-6 weeks.

He has an injury and a cast. They have a duty to make reasonable adjustments - that's to wear what will fit.

I would suggest ski mittens to wear over the end of the cast as his fingers will get cold due to lack of movement as well as the temps due to plummet.

Bettybantz · 02/01/2022 15:24

What’s his usual uniform? My DS is a dyspraxic skater, so casts are a pretty regular thing here. He’s never had a problem with clothes - although when he was younger he found pull on trousers/joggers easier than flies.

powershowerforanhour · 02/01/2022 15:25

DD happened to have a cheap sweatshirt the same colour (no school badge) so I chopped one arm off it and she wore that. It was September though, so not overly cold. She's in primary school so polo shirts rather than long sleeved school shirts, and some of her larger polo shirts fitted, bad arm first. (I'd probably send a secondary school child in a polo shirt rather than hacking up a good long sleeved shirt, unless the good arm was getting a bit cold).

SpookyScarySkeletons · 02/01/2022 15:26

Short sleeved shirt and 1 size bigger jumper.

My DD did the same about 10 years ago. Got hit by a car and broke his wrist.

PiIsAReallyLongNumber · 02/01/2022 16:07

Thank you @BeanAnTae. I'll get that ordered this evening.
Also yes, this happened new years eve morning and since then I've got "take your hand out of your pocket, stop climbing stuff, no you can't go on the trampoline/bike/scooter" on repeat.

Somebody asked about the cast. It's the temp cast right now but he's getting the permanent one tomorrow morning.

He, unfortunately, is a monkey boy. He climbs and jumps everything. At 10 this is his third break. Last year was his foot which weirdly felt a bit easier than the wrist which he managed to break in 2 places 🤦‍♀️
