Do I need to do anything about this AQ Score?

I've just taken this online assessment and got score of 37.

psychology-tools.com/test/autism-spectrum-quotient

Not sure how reliable this particular assessment tool is though or whether there is a better option.

I've always suspected I have autistic traits but as a 50 year old woman would there be any point in taking this further?

Has anyone else done same test and then referred themselves for additional help or assessment?

I score very highly on it and come from a very autistic family.

At this point in my life, I feel there is little to be gained from pursuing it.

hangonamo · 02/01/2022 17:51

Thank you @anilluminatednewyearforme that's very useful to know

anilluminatednewyearforme · 02/01/2022 17:53

For people who may want to look into private assessment but it is unaffordable, this clinic are offering fully or part funded assessments dependent on income if you can get a referral from a GP or other related professional. Might be worth a look: www.caudwellchildren.com/services/autism/

anilluminatednewyearforme · 02/01/2022 17:57

Those are for children, sorry, but still.

Same situation here, dd1 diagnosed autistc /absorbers aged 10, recognised many of the same traits in myself, I have a history of depression/anxiety so decided to do the AQ test and got a score a score of 35, still haven't decided whether to speak to gp or not.

Justkeeppedaling · 02/01/2022 18:10

I just scored 35, but I'm pretty sure I'm not on the spectrum!

It's highly unlikely to score 37 and not go on to receive a diagnosis, if you choose to be fully assessed, IMO
Is that true @anilluminatednewyearforme ?

my score was 46 or 47 when I took it a while back

It is my opinion based on looking at the average scores of a neurotypical female, suspected ASD female and diagnosed ASD female (all of which are under that!).
DoryisinCuba · 02/01/2022 23:24

@ruthydoodles24f

You can of course go to your gp with this

My son got 38 I got 34 we are not going for testing although quirky we "cope" in the neurotypical world so don't see the point in getting diagnosed.

If you think a diagnosis will help you, you should though

Good luck

Similar here. I have previously done this test and scored 44 which didn’t surprise me much.

I can’t see any point at all in getting a diagnosis at 50. I have a friend who got a diagnosis recently and they seem to have made their entire identity suddenly about being autistic. I know it may explain some of the ways I react to situations but I’ve done ok and adapted where necessary to live overall a happy and successful life.

Sticking a label on it at this stage seems pointless to me. Everyone is different though, I would have a think about what is going to change for you with a diagnosis, then go ahead if you think it would be a positive thing for you.

@DoryisinCuba

In the kindest way possible, I really hope you haven’t expressed this to them! I suspected I was autistic for ten years before I was diagnosed in October 2021. I have 100% become more outwardly autistic because, rightly or wrongly, it feels like I now have ‘permission’ to fully be me after a lifetime of exhausting masking.

I’ve tried hard not to monologue or make everything about my diagnoses (ADHD, dyspraxia and dyslexia all diagnosed last year too) but I’m 31 and keep having ‘oh shittttt, that was autism!’ moments about my past. It’s a lot to unpack, even if you’re fully expecting the diagnosis. I’m also on medication for ADHD now and I’m completely mourning the life I could have had with the correct support.

I realise I’m projecting here Grin but bear with your friend, I’m sure she’ll settle into a new normal.

DoryisinCuba · 03/01/2022 13:05

@amusedbush no of course I haven’t said anything negative to her.

Good luck with your journey.

I know this is an old thread but rather than starting a new one, I wondered if you ever sought a diagnosis?

I just did the test and scored 37. I have a child who has autism and another with adhd. I come from a family with others with autism.

CrotchetyQuaver · 04/04/2023 21:04

I've done this test before and scored low 40's, Im in my late 50's.
I thought about pursuing a formal diagnosis, but never did anything about it. I feared more medical gaslighting and wasn't sure I had the emotional strength to over come that.
I've a few special interests/obsessions and play a musical instrument to a very high level. Some stupid compulsive behaviour in the past, not very good at reading people/understanding social norms. I also wonder if I have attention deficit disorder as well.
I've just finally accepted I'm me with my oddities. I indulge them now and don't try to be somebody I'm not and when it's all too much, I take myself off for some peace and quiet...
just accepting I probably am on the spectrum has helped me so much.
