Heavy period help please

I think I have PCOS, for the past 3 years I've had no period as such just mostly spotting with the occasional heavier bleed.
This morning, I woke drenched in blood with clots, I'm changing pads every hourish, transamic acid has calmed it slightly, but I'm just a bit freaked out?
Anybody with any experience? I'm also under A LOT of stress at the moment.

I really do think it's worth calling the doctors or 111. This isn't usual for you, and when I had similar bleeding the doctors calculated at that rate I would have bled to death in a few days - I had also already been taking tranexamic acid: they were able to give me an alternative medication and also put me immediately into the pill which got things under control, but obviously without intervention it might have been different. I was young then, so didn't weigh that much which will have influenced the amount of blood I could afford to lose but I still don't think ignoring it is the right course of action - and I wouldn't want to wait until Tuesday when the normal GP opens.

I had heavy periods for about 8 months. I would leak through tampon, pad and clothes and this severely affected my confidence. I finally saw the doctor about it, had scans (internal & ultrasound) and there was literally nothing wrong! I definitely not menopausal as this was 3 years ago and I’m currently 9 months pregnant! I had stressed myself for that time and within a month of finding out it was nothing they had settled. I did still get a heavy flow for a day or so & some clots but apparently that’s not unusual.

A and e are pretty useless tbh. I ended up there with a similar situation a few month back and I got tranexamic acid and booted out with a call your gp in the morning..I’d collapsed in the waiting room and left a pool of blood on one of the seats. Gp found I was severely anaemic and b12 deficient and my hormones were nearly in peri. Also grief and stress and anxiety played their part. I’m on the pill now which has helped a lot

Prese don't accept anyone (medical or otherwise) telling you this is a woman's lot.

You should have bloods done, even though they might say it's not helpful if you do not know which day of your cycle it is...

Full iron panel (need a ferritin of at least 70 if you're of child bearing years according to my haematologist)
Hormones (including testosterone, and hcg- could've have been a surprise, v early pregnancy)
FBC full blood panel, to note any raised white blood cells or crp/ inflammatory markers

Ultrasound too.

The fact that you have rarely had a period recently, and then suddenly a huge bleed is definitely an issue.

Could be peri, could be fibroids, could be "just" a hormonal hiccup, but could, rarely be the beginnings of an endometrial or other growth.

You can ask for support, and tell us you're scared, and we will 100% commiserate, but this is one of those moments where you need to be a grown up, and get it checked out.

A day of feeling worried, a day of squeamishness, a few days of waiting for results. All horrible, but nothing compared to what you, and any loved ones would have to deal with if you just stick your head in the sand for a year, and then find yourself having drastic surgery, and/or other treatments.

Just make a call, don't even give yourself time to think about it!

Good luck, and remember to come on here or find a real life hand to hold.

Honestly, menopause is nothing like a sad as having gynae cancer at stage 3 or 4. Least likely outcome, but needs to be crossed off the list. And start now, everything is slower with covid.

PS @Onehotmessiah - don't shoot the messenger, but just because you're pg doesn't mean you're not perinenopausal.. many women have got pg during that 10 year stage, and many when they thought they were fully meno!

It just means your hormones are shifting. Dangerous to assume, until you've been cleared properly. Lots of accidental pgs at this time.

I’m 39 and peri. I have fibroids and polyps , discovered on the internal and am anaemic. Insanely heavy periods (I will go through two super plus in an hour, I have to put two in each time…)

Hospital appointment for surgery talks is next week. I can’t live with it. The pain is unreal.

It’s also why I’m awake at this time. Between my belly button and tops of thighs I think I have a thrash metal band rehearsing in my womb.

Please get it checked out. I waited three months of mid cycle bleeding to flag so there was a pattern.

AnotherMansCause · 02/01/2022 11:07

@Loopylou6 did you get help or has it slowed down yet? If it has you still need to get a doctor's appointment ASAP though.

Loopylou6 · 02/01/2022 17:01

Hi, thanks for checking on me.
It calmed at around 2am, and hopefully it stays like that, fingers crossed. I know I need to get it looked into tho 😩

@Loopylou6 I had this, frightened the sodding life out of me. Turned out (after months of being bounced about by GPs) to be angry little fibroid bastards! My consultant was brilliant, sped me through by booking me via the Cancer clinic (needed to be ruled out but also got me seen and sorted very quickly after 5 months of sudden flooding). Really crappy surgery on the day which I can't say was any fun at all, now all is calm and I can go out again without panicking about ending up like the end scene from 'Carrie' in Tesco.

Hope you're OK and get sorted quickly chuck.

AnxiousHeffalump · 02/01/2022 17:08

I had a period like that after my Covid booster. Have you recently had a vaccine or booster?

Loopylou6 · 02/01/2022 17:25

Thanks for sharing bess
Not had my booster yet anxious, but yes, I have seen a lot of people reporting weird periods after jabs

OP, have you called 111 or been seen? I was anaemic. They gave me a triple dose of norethisterone and the bleeding still happened on and off. I had to have a hysterectomy due to fibroids. As I say, I was, am, s* scared of internal examinations and needles, but the situation was practically impossible and anaemia risks your internal organs. Happy to tell you the op was hard but I was so much better in a week or so and the problem is now resolved.
