I'm going to try it.

Would love ideas of other people's rules!

Is there room for one more to join in?

Belledan1 · 01/01/2022 18:05

Think there is a thread in credit crunch.

GoodnightGrandma · 01/01/2022 18:06

I’m like this anyway I think only buy what I need. Unfortunately DH is the opposite 😩
I’d like to tag along for tips.

Thedogshow · 01/01/2022 18:07

I am hoping to do this, but starting just with January to make it more manageable

Itsmemaggie · 01/01/2022 18:09

Oh I need to do this, I’m a sucker for ‘sales’ and ‘special offers’ and shiny new things.

Step 1 for me is going to be to unsubscribe from marketing emails.

Oh thank you! I'll have a look and will link it here when I find it Smile

I'm in! We are financially comfortable but tend to fritter away more money than we should.

My weakness is clothes and books. I've got enough clothes, and if I lose 2 stone (another NY resolution) then I can fit into lots more in my wardrobe! I am going to try just to use the library for books, plus I've got about 50 books that I haven't read yet.

Nonamenoplacetogo · 01/01/2022 18:16

I’d love to do this too! Spend a fortune in the supermarket and in charity shops. I need to sell some clothes and not bring anything else into the house Confused

Watchamocauli · 01/01/2022 18:17

Me! Amazon prime stops on 14th Jan and then I plan to unsubscribe from all mktg emails for fashion and Home stuff. May be unfollow insta and FB groups. Opt out of two WhatsApp shopping groups. Meal plans to keep me focus on online grocery weekly shops. Already deleted Deliveroo and UberEats. Lets see how long it lasts.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 01/01/2022 18:23

I can see a No Spend January, but can't see a No Buy / Low Buy year...

If anyone finds it, it would be amazing if they could link.

In the meantime, I'm recording my rules here!

  1. No clothes (including secondhand)
Exceptions: if something truly gets worn out and cannot be mended OR if I need a new bra if I happen to lose weight and boobs shrink! Refuse to wear an ill fitting bra

  2. Toiletries: no experiments! Just buy what I actually use. Make up can only be replaced when it runs out

  3. Books: going to try not to buy any physical books - I have so many to read! I am allowing myself Kindle books

  4. Entertainment: keep Netflix and Disney, but no other subscriptions. Cancelling Audible and Prime

  5. Household items: a bit like clothes, only if something essential gets worn out completely

  6. Hobbies: I'm not taking up any more hobbies! I have enough art stuff to see me through the year

  7. takeaways and coffees: I'm trying to limit this to two per month.... I'm not counting special meet ups with friends, as I don't do those very often anyway

That's all I can think of at the moment.

The reason why I'm doing it is because I'm saving for a few big things and also because my house is too cluttered and also to reduce carbon footprint

OP posts:
SarahJessicaParker1 · 01/01/2022 18:30

Reading that back...am I being too lenient?

Well, it's a start. If I exceed my expectations, all the better!

I'm in! I'm hoping to do a bigvwalking holiday in the summer so I want to save up for that. I'm going to start with January and expand from there.
My rules so far
I'm only going to buy clothes if the old item is worn out and essential.
I'm not going to pop into town on my days off so I won't be tempted by coffee and cake.
No meals out or takeaways unless it is a birthday.
Only free days out or ones using tesco vouchers and always take a packed lunch.
I'll have to think of low spend ways to get some joy into our lives too otherwise it all becomes a bit of a trudge.

FionnulaTheCooler · 01/01/2022 18:51

I'm going to try very hard not to buy anything non consumable unless it's actually needed. So things like meals out takeaways etc still OK as an occasional treat, but I have just had a big declutter and have a cupboard full of stuff to be charity shopped or binned, I really don't want to reclutter the house.

MandUs · 01/01/2022 19:17

I'm planning to do this.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/01/2022 19:33

Oh this is a good idea, I have spent a FRIGHTENING amount of money this year, and apart from being a waste I use it to distract myself

Ok

  • Massive reduction in Taxi use. Two cabs a month limit. Use them wisely..
  • No new clothes or shoes unless anything actually wears out, or I really have to because of weight loss. If I have to I will try and use eBay rather than buy new.
  • No junk/play food in my shop (I am trying to loose weight anyway), no takeaway coffees except when travelling. No takeaway junk/play food.
  • No takeaway lunches at work.
  • No restaurants except when friends/family staying or an actual event
  • No new books until I read the ones I have at home. Only buy one book at a time.
  • No more buying house bits and bobs.
  • I will get rid of cable and unread subscriptions, but keeping audible and streamers as it’s part of my job
  • 1 week cool off period for courses, yoga memberships, theatre tickets - to check they really have value and purpose and aren’t an impulse spend
  • Also I want to set a proper budget this year, so any books, theatre tickets need to be in budget
carlyswirly · 01/01/2022 19:55

I did a toiletry inventory earlier due to isolation boredom. Bloody hell. After not going on holiday for 2 years I have loads of unused travel sized things. I think I can get through 2022 only buying toothpaste and deodorant. So much make up too.

I'm going to do an enormous charity drop off for clothes - I have too many to actually see what I own so end up wearing the same few things. We have a drive through site locally which is amazing.

This is about reclaiming space for me. I must have about 50 pairs of knickers. Blush

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 01/01/2022 20:08

I'm doing this too. I'm still working out my own rules but I'm definitely joining in!

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 01/01/2022 20:12

Mee!!!!!

Rules

  1. Only replace products when finished and nothing left in that category
  1. Clothes when needed rather than just fancying it
  1. No Amazon, mid week Tesco purchases, popping to the canteen in work
  1. No impulse buys, sit on something for a few weeks and if it's something that's NEEDED then purchase, if it's something WANTED, add to a list for gift ideas
  1. No planner/stationery related purchases
  1. No bags or purchases
  1. Lunch/coffee with friends and family is okay
  1. Gifts for others on birthdays etc is ok
AColdDuncanGoodhew · 01/01/2022 20:17

6 should be bags or purses

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 01/01/2022 20:18

I did this 2 years ago. Main thing was no new clothes. Plan was to wear things out...... Obviously covid hit lol so didnt need any work clothes (wfh) and i just wore out things. Was very liberating. Still doing it (kinda) have had to get a few things but they have been needed. Losing weight helped as it opened up a whole new wardrobe!

CharSiu · 01/01/2022 20:55

I have always been like this

Only replace when stuff wears out
I also can’t experiment with any cosmetics or shampoos as I’m very allergic to any perfume so use simple and Clinique only, can’t buy perfume or fabric conditioner

I always think I have one body I can only wear ken thing at a time

Plus the more stuff the more clutter which I hate.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 01/01/2022 21:39

Yes, some people just aren't naturally acquisitional.

My dh is like that. Only buys what he needs. Has zero interest in fashion, so his clothes never go in and out of style, so he doesn't have to replace them unless they fall apart. He doesn't ever feel like buying updated versions if anything.

It's probably a very good way to be tbh.

For the rest of us though, I'm quite looking forward to our no buy year! I love clothes which is my downfall. I did a year of no new clothes, but swiftly developed a charity shop and ebay habit that year. So I'm not even buying secondhand this year.

lljkk · 01/01/2022 21:45

I feel like I have been trying to follow OP's rules for 10 yrs & made little progress (!!) New stuff always comes into my house, anyway.

elastamum · 01/01/2022 21:49

I started doing this when I retired last year. I have only replaced things that were worn out and I feel much better for it and it is helping me live within my reduced income. Only problem is that as a result of not sitting at a desk I have also lost 6kg so everything in my wardrobe is getting a bit big on me! Unsubscribing from all emails so I don't get offers has removed the temptation to impulse buy.

GrumpyLivesInMyHouseNow · 01/01/2022 21:51

Me too, can I join please. I did this a few years ago, and it worked pretty well for a while. I need to get my store card and credit card paid off. I ordered a coat last night, that I didn't necessarily need, so this is it for me now
