Tips for keeping your home tidy!

I love these threads so thought i'd start a new year one.
I plan to get a skip next week to get rid of things we don't need anymore.
I am then going to hire a cleaner to come and do a deep clean.
Then I want to go back to the TOMM method of keeping things tidy.

Any everyday things that make your life easier?

I have ADHD and I have a “Doom Box” in every room - basically, when I’m tidying, things that don’t belong in that room go in the Doom Box. The box is then emptied into the correct places.

Sounds ridiculous but it works Grin

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/01/2022 08:50

I like that!

What's TOMM? I follow the OHIO rule and thus year I will be encouraging dh to follow it to. (Only Handle It Once)

Banish the children to a shed. Means inside the house stays a lot tidier. Grin

Once a week I start at the front door and work left around the entire house, cleaning obnoxious things like walls, cupboard handles or skirting boards that need it- putting anything back in its place that doesn’t belong there, sorting any basic diy or new lightbulbs that have been left. It’s quite effective!

Don’t buy lots of stuff

Get all the family involved in tidying not just you
The 5 minute tidy - set an alarm and everyone helps to do as much as you can before the timer goes off. Amazing how much you can get done in that time

Have a laundry system that works for you.

The organised mum method. You basically spend 20 minutes a day cleaning a specific room. That is on top of the basics like washing.

I love this idea and it seems manageable. I am definitely giving this a go.

Definitely going to get the kids more involved! Especially as they are so bloody messy.

Think about what creates mess and then address storage in that location.
For example if there are always random throws around in the front room, and they are used, put a willow basket there to store them.
If storage solutions are close to the point of use, there's more chance things will be put away.

Invite people over! I never clean as speedily and thoroughly as when I have guests due.

That is a total gamechanger idea for me! Thank you!

(Currently I have a doom sofa in every room. Doom box much better idea).

Yes 😂

The structure of TOMM has made a big difference for me. Keep on top of decluttering, get rid of the toys/clothes dc outgrow.

coraka · 01/01/2022 11:14

For me, it helps to break everything down into small jobs that can be accomplished quickly. So instead of clearing out a whole cupboard, I will clear one shelf.

I clean one shelf in the fridge a day. It means the whole fridge is cleaned weekly and also means i can keep on top of food that needs to be used up. It takes 5 minutes and has really made a big difference (as i hate hate hate icky fridges).

It's also more appealing to tidy if your home looks nice and calm when it's done.
It's worth paying attention to the decor and getting little DIY jobs done.
If you have mouldy grouting in the bathroom, the urge to keep it tidy is far less.
