It's against the law to be drunk in a pub, apparently.
Or for boys to see naked mannequins.
Or to dress up as a soldier for Halloween.
Or ring a doorbell and run away.
It's treason to put a stamp of the queen upside down.
What's up with that

From the buzz feed article "You're not allowed to fly a kite in a public place within the limits of the metropolitan police district." so the Banks family in Mary Poppins turn straight to crime when she leaves? Shock

PrincessNutella · 01/01/2022 06:18

I don't know how I would be able to live with the injustice of the law forbidding women to eat chocolate on buses!

Yes, a great way to get a child to help carry the shopping is to let them carry a bag with smoked salmon in it suspiciously.

It's illegal to be drunk anywhere other than. in your own home and nit even then if there are small DC and no other suitable person in a fit state.

It's an offence to impersonate police and military any time, not just Halloween (so don't include rank slides or numbers, and make your fancy dress a bit OTT - it's the same idea as not carrying replica weapons, so make sure your cowboy gun is plasticy and shiny and could not possibly be mistaken for the real thing)

The stamp thing is an urban myth. Yes it's widely considered naff/disrespectful, but it's nit an actual offence.

My favourite is the suspicious salmon (rooted in anti-patching laws, I think?)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/01/2022 06:46

In Alabama, its illegal to walk around with an ice cream cone in your back pocket....

KeeG8181 · 01/01/2022 07:01

There's not really an elaboration on suspicious salmon is there

EdithWeston · 01/01/2022 07:07

I'd come across the salmon one before - it's a lovely example of how weird legalese can sound in normal speech

I’ve stuck my stamps on in all manner of ways. Royal mail don’t care so long as it has the right value

PrincessNutella · 01/01/2022 07:25

Good for you--live dangerously!

@Feather12

You also can’t buy guns in supermarkets, and sexual orientation and gender identity are protected characteristics everywhere (this is a thread about a thread and they were getting pretty offended about blackcurrants on that thread 😂)
If you're talking about the UK Equality Act, the protected characteristics are sexual orientation, sex, and gender reassignment.

I had a temp job somewhere that dd a large mailing every month and it was all hands on deck to stick stamps on. The guy in charge used to go mad if he spotted one that was not the right way up or was wonky. I pointed out that for no extra cost he could take them to the main P.O and get them franked instead!!
PrincessNutella · 01/01/2022 15:11

There are silly laws on the books everywhere, I guess.

I very much doubt that the Queen gives a toss what way up you stick your stamps. What kind of stupid law is that?

GTAlogic · 01/01/2022 15:47

There was a YouTube video on this topic - the bloke committed as many crimes as he could in 24hrs - and it was funny, especially the bit where he carried the salmon suspiciously! I can't find it now though.

Userguaranteed · 01/01/2022 16:14

Wait it's illegal to get drunk in a pub or anywhere outside your home?

Err just about everyone and their dog gets drunk outside in the UK and they're falling about everywhere. Unless they get involved in a brawl, is this even true?

110APiccadilly · 01/01/2022 16:15

It might be treason to stick the stamp on upside down, but I don't think treason is a legal offence anymore?

Userguaranteed · 01/01/2022 16:15

Because it's not really being enforced.

Userguaranteed · 01/01/2022 16:16

^ That was part of my first post.

I think Arson in the Royal Dockyards may still be treason, or at least till relatively recently.

Was it this one

Yes Theunamedcat it was, thank you!

Being drunk and having a slash down a dark alleyway certainly gets you into trouble, if caught. Apparently.

PrincessNutella · 01/01/2022 22:24

Loved the scofflaw video!!
