I got a new plate set for Christmas.

As title says
I (in reality DH&I) got a new, matching set of plates, bowls etc for Christmas.

The first side plate was broken today.

We are a family of klutzes. It was an accident. But for a little while, I had matching stuff! This is why I said Asda was fine...

(Considering buying a box of spares...)

Lovely OP. But yes defo buy spares and soon. I recently bought a (cheap) set in the sales and broke a plate 2 weeks in replacements were no longer available 🤷‍♀️

winnieanddaisy · 31/12/2021 19:54

My DD usually buys 2 or 3 sets because she occasionally has up to 12 for dinner and likes them to match Grin

I've had x2 different Denby sets over the years and I didn't realise it at the time but they were indestructible. I ended up selling them both. I then fancied a nice new modern set which I bought and they are chipped to bits! We've broken all but one bowl and we are not that clumsy. I am going back to Denby again - when I drop a Denby bowl it bounces instead of breaking. I know they are expensive but I always had the seconds and they were fine.

Buy spares now! If you need 6 then buy 8!!

AmandaHoldensLips · 31/12/2021 22:12

This is why I only buy plain white porcelain crockery. At least it's all the same colour. And don't get me started on wine glasses...

NewBrownMouse · 31/12/2021 22:22

We are quite clumsy in our house, I bought a spare of each, and 2 spares of the side plates, no spares left now.
I was looking for wine glasses for Christmas evening and we seem to have lost four out of a set of six in the space of a year!

VexedofVirginiaWater · 31/12/2021 22:32

Have had my dinner service for nearly 40 years - well we started collecting it then and have added to it. Broken the odd piece. Of course it was discontinued years ago, but you can still get it on Ebay.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 31/12/2021 22:44

I am re vamping my crockery, but cannot find a whole set that I like so I am buying it piecemeal

Only white and eight of everything. But I could be tempted by blue and white!

I rediscovered some beautiful fruit plates I had stashed on the loft while the children were small, they are white china with gold fruits on them so they are out now and only put into use with an acknowledged Monica warning.

I need large and medium dinner plates, soup plates, smaller pudding bowls, tea plates, and teeny tiny fancy cake plates!

I have pasta bowls and six square(ish) dinner plates and some horribly chipped tea plates.

I was in Morrisons before Christmas and they have some nice china so am going back for a recce next week.

I remember dm got a new set when I was about 6 or 7. She was very proud because before she just had a mismatched set.

My uncle (her brother) helped with the washing up about a week later, and was carrying the entire set of plates back to the cupboard when they slipped. We had one left whole.

Get a spare set.

RomeoMcFlourish · 01/01/2022 00:02

@Whatliesbeneath707 I always thought Denby were indestructible too until recently, when I dropped one and it smashed, with lots of tiny shards getting embedded into my face. Will always buy Denby though!

sageandbasil · 01/01/2022 00:23

I feel your rage. I was in tears yesterday because in the last 2 days my husbands broken 2 royal doukton wine glasses that were a wedding present and a few weeks ago one of my coveted RD mugs

jmh740 · 01/01/2022 00:32

My mum has some denby plates etc she's had over 20 years and I remember thinking they were really expensive but I've spent 28 on 2 sets from asda today( they were half price)to replace the last lot I got from sainsburys a couple of years ago which are chipped or have smashed I was thinking it would probably have made more sense to buy one expensive lot that would last 20 odd years than 20/30 every couple of years

Solmum1964 · 01/01/2022 00:38

@Whatliesbeneath707 @RomeoMcFlourish do you realise you can buy Denby with Tesco Clubcard vouchers? Makes it much more reasonable.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 01/01/2022 00:45

I always buy when Sainsbos reduce them. I bought 12 matching white dinner plates for 2 quid each about 3 years ago. Still have 11 intact!
Did the same with side plates. All white so doesn't have to be matchy matchy

Fifthtimelucky · 01/01/2022 10:22

I treated myself to a new Denby white set a month or so ago - 12 each of dinner plates, medium plates, side plates, pudding bowls and pasta bowls.

They were half price in the pre Christmas sale and all bought with Clubcard vouchers. The only thing I paid was the £4.95 p&p!

Thanks for support. We had two sets as each came with 4 of each (on a regular basis we need up to 7). I'll keep my eye out for a spare box. (Its the Asda spotty design).

I'm not angry with DD. Genuine accident, they happen.

Before we had completely missed matched stuff as we topped up regularly when stuff got broken. Some was 11 years old, other bits just one or two.
