So beyond chocolate, what can I include? He’s the 15 yr son of a good friend, going for a relatively serious operation, so will be immobile for a week or so. Was thinking of a couple of magazines (any suggestions), but what else???

And he’s not into sport at all!

Something like a Rubik’s cube or similar puzzle type thing? Other snacky treats - flavoured popcorn, some nice drinks.

Depending on if you think it would interest him, a paint by numbers or model type kit (thinking the slot together wooden sort).

What tech does he have?

Headphones so he can watch/listen without disturbing others and also block out general ward noise

New games if he has a switch or some other sort of portable gaming device

Audio books or movies - probably best to give vouchers so he can choose what he likes

A nice shower gel? My DS likes this yorkshiresoap.co.uk/bath-bodycare/shower-gels/no8-yorkshire-lad - to me, starting to shower again really makes you start to feel human after an op.

Paperyfish · 31/12/2021 16:52

Will he be able to sit up? If not some of those weird glasses with mirrors in so you can read your book or see the tv whilst laying on your back.

Paperyfish · 31/12/2021 16:53

These things

@Paperyfish - I’m not sure. I’ll ask, as it’s certainly a possibility - they look really useful

If he's into gaming, an xbox gift card or similar for when he's recovering at home?

Cakemadeoffruit · 31/12/2021 18:40

Lego set
Polymer clay and tool set for modelling
Xbox/play station gift voucher
Fluffy socks
Dressing gown
Pyjamas
Boiled sweets (last longer than chocolate)
Tip tops for freezing, great if thirsty but not to tired to drink

Hotfootit · 31/12/2021 20:08

Thanks. Really good ideas.

Food!!!

Hospital food only comes three times a day and teens are hungry beings.

Mandarins/satsumas
Grapes
Brownie
Muesli bars

Boiled sweets are quite dangerous if you're lying down!
Avarua · 31/12/2021 20:21

And
Chocolate milk (in a box with a straw)

Cakemadeoffruit · 01/01/2022 00:55

No shit Sherlock.

Hotfootit · 01/01/2022 01:21

Food! 16+ years since I’ve been in hospital. I’d forgotten about the quantity of food.

Some kind of cordial or squash to drink, somehow the water always tastes foul in hospital and you need something to make it bearable to drink!

CakesOfVersailles · 01/01/2022 01:33

Depends on your budget:

If he is going to be at home for his recovery, one of those breakfast trays/lap trays with legs down the side so he can put his laptop on it if he's sitting up in bed.

Voucher for audiobooks? Some headphones? One of my friend's son's is very into needle felting but that might be a bit niche.
