Sil reckons it’s just where the out people if no beds. I always thought it was for life threatening issues.

I have had the pleasure(!) of being in resus 3 times. Once with my husband when he was near death after respiratory arrest/brain bleed; one when my toddler DD had a severe kidney infection and it was the quietest place in A&E that night to keep a close eye on her and once with my mum who dislocated her shoulder and they use resus to give meds whilst relocating the shoulder. It's used for a variety of things. You're both in theory correct, but priority would be for the sickest people (the clue is in 'resuscitation'!)

Ex A&E nurse. It’s for life threatening emergencies. Our resus bays were never occupied with people waiting for beds. That’s what the corridors are sadly for.

Serious but not life-threatening things get sent to majors, not resus.

With my latest miscarriage I started in majors then spent 4 hrs in resus on a drip and blood transfusions before emergency surgery, the one before that they managed a procedure in majors which stopped the bleeding so I only needed a drip.

The only other person in resus with me had had a heart attack, and there were plenty of people waiting out in A&E reception, so they were definitely keeping those bays for the worst cases.

I was in resus when I went into anaphylactic shock. Every other person in there was seriously unwell.

A+E Sister here. Our resus is full most of the time with very unwell patients. We sometimes have to step patients down into our majors area even though they are very sick, to make room for the next one that is pre alerted.
We sadly have a corridor to put patients whilst they waits for beds in MAU and SAU etc
