Moving to the Coast - but where?

CoastalWave · 30/12/2021 23:44

So, growing up I always lived by the coast. Somehow, as an adult, I've ended up living near a city, up North, andlocked and somewhat existing as opposed to living!

Myself, DH and 2 kids would love to move to the coast - but where?

Please inspire me with ideas of where is good to live.

We also need somewhere not too isolated as both kids play a lot of sports and want to continue doing so.

Withernsea is nice

Nonbio46 · 31/12/2021 00:24

I live in Whitley Bay on the north east coast and can highly recommend it. X

pisspants · 31/12/2021 00:30

What's your budget, how many rooms do you need and any preferences for part of the country? is schooling/ jobs a factor?

CoastalWave · 31/12/2021 00:38

Budget is about £350 max. Schools are important - 2 primary aged kids but will be in high schools in next 3 years.

Pref 4 bed but probably will only get 3 bed for budget.

Have already lived near Withernsea growing up actually, so yes, love that area but looking for somewhere new!

Whitley Bay I've heard is lovely - what are the schools like?

If Withernsea is classed as 'not too isolated' I would think you could live pretty much anywhere on the coast! I'm sure last time I went I drove to the arse end of nowhere and then a bit further

Justkeeppedaling · 31/12/2021 01:05

Are you looking for wild coast, Victorian seaside resort, small fishing village, bustling port town, or what?

Treedown · 31/12/2021 01:16

I second whitley bay. Plenty of good schools to choose from and your budget would get the house you wanted.

The schools in Whitley Bay are brilliant - the high school is outstanding. It's a really lovely community and a beautiful beach and up the road is the Northumbrian coast line. It has become more expensive in recent years but you still might be able to find a nice house with your budget. you're also close to Newcastle.

bananasinchristmaspyjamas · 31/12/2021 06:13

Have you considered Cornwall? Or is that way too far?

WarriorN · 31/12/2021 06:15

Was going to say the same. Tynemouth too pricey now but Whitley bay or cullercoats are great.

Schools all good, mix of two tier and 3 tier along there.

Prices rapidly rising though so go for it quick!

@thirstyformore

Withernsea is nice
Shock

Withernsea is east of Hull, which is itself pretty isolated (train station is a terminus etc). 'With' also has all of the usual problems associated with coastal communities.

CoastalWave · 31/12/2021 17:01

Whitley Bay really does look nice! Had a good look on Rightmove.

Cornwall isn't too far but I'm worried it might be too isolated re the kids sports opportunities

The Dorset coast is lovely. Plenty of places which aren’t too remote. I think I’d choose to be in the Poole area, but maybe not Poole itself. Probably more pricy than up north though.

AvocadoAndToast · 31/12/2021 17:11

Wirral like West Kirby/ Thurstaston is lovely and has miles of gorgeous coast while not being far at all from Liverpool/ Chester.

Parts of Northumberland like Alnwick are lovely and rugged and scenic, but are a bit further out and not too close to major cities - Newcastle being the closest and then Edinburgh a couple of hours North.

Also, N Wales but there you have Welsh first language schools which you might not be looking for.

Wotrewelookinat · 31/12/2021 18:37

We moved from London to the suffolk east coast a few years ago, between Ipswich and Woodbridge. Schools are pretty good. For sports there are the usual things, plus sailing, windsurfing, kayaking. Lots of beach’s, rivers and countryside p, and it’s less than 2 hours to get into London,.

Chipsahoy · 31/12/2021 21:37

North east coast. Stunning all the way along. Spoiled for beaches here.

cheapskatemum · 31/12/2021 22:06

Another vote for Suffolk coast. Woodbridge is on the River Deben, but a short drive from Thorpeness, Southwold, Aldeburgh and Walberswick. If you don't mind living a short drive away from the beach, Halesworth is also good.

Moonmelodies · 31/12/2021 22:13

Positano?

Likeasorethumb · 31/12/2021 22:29

Another vote for Whitley Bay. Excellent schools, beaches, loads to do and fab sports clubs.

Riverlee · 31/12/2021 22:40

Kent has lots of lovely coastal towns (been exploring them over the last year)
Whitstable - pricey
Deal - lovely
Margate - improving reputation
Bexhill-On-Sea on sea

tanama · 31/12/2021 23:25

Poole?! For 350k?!

Whitley Bay is lovely but you would get more for your money slightly further north or south. North maybe amble/seaton sluice, even blyth.

South you could try South Shields, Whitburn, roker, seaburn even Seaham.

Eg 4 bed, literally a minute from the sea

Theendisnow · 31/12/2021 23:54

Those who live in Whitley Bay do you find it friendly? We live in a “desirable” south east market town and I don’t find it at all friendly. Would love to move to the North east but it would be a huge uproot but I’d love to be part of a friendly community.

Takingabreakagain · 01/01/2022 00:19

Sefton/North Liverpool - great schools, close to the coast and local facilities, easy access to public transport into Liverpool or Southport (great as the kids get older) lots of sports clubs and only 2 hours to London from Liverpool city centre.
Four plus bedrooms for around £350,000
